We are always amazed at the unique and creative ideas our Artists In Residence create every month. January is all about planners as we expect January to be the season for resolutions, goal-setting and planning. Jessica Litman, Martha Lucia Gomez, and Jennifer Vanderbeek show us a powerhouse variety of planner crafts including DIY washi tape, and designing your own planner stickers. We love these resourceful ideas. Share them with anyone you know who is a planner geek!
Washi tape could be one of my favorite embellishments for planners. It easily breaks up pages into different sections, adds color to all white pages and is just fun! This project came out of my need for a variety of washi tape colors without spending a lot of money!
Lay tissue paper flat on craft mat. Create small polka dots on tissue paper using irRESISTible Pico Embellishers.
Let sit until dots are not quite dry, but just damp. Cover tissue paper with shipping tape. Push over dots to create a tie dye effect. Set aside to fully dry. Cut into long strips.
Run the strips through Xyron sticker maker. (Make sure the shipping tape side is facing up.) Peel off tissue paper from sticker backing.
Adhere to your planner, cards, or roll up over an old tape dispenser!

I made my own “washi tape” with traditional mailing labels and different inks and texture. I’ll share how I did it so you can do it yourself.
Take a label sheet and place a stencil over it. Secure the stencil with masking tape. Apply Creative Medium Iridescent Turquoise to the stencil.
If you want to intensify the color, mix the Creative Medium with Memento Ink first. I added a few sweeps of Paris Dusk and Memento Desert Sand on the craft mat and mixed them with the palette knife to darken the color. You don’t need to remove the stencil to change the colors, just keep it in place and apply your different combinations. Let dry.
To change the design and texture take a different stencil and place over the same label sheet. Secure it with masking tape. Apply VersaMark directly with the pad over the free areas of the stencil. Remove the stencil and apply Gold Embossing Powder. Melt with the heat tool. Finally, take a border stamp and stamp it directly over the sheet. I used several different border stamps with Brilliance Ink – Pearlescent Jade.
Remove the labels from the adhesive sheet and resize them according to the size of your planner.

I love my planner, and I like being able to add quick decorative accents to it. Stamps are a fabulous way to do that, but I plan as I go and frequently update my planner away from home. This makes planner stamps less than optimal because of all the gear I’d need to carry with me. To solve that problem, I sat down with my stamps, ink pads, and a whole lot of label sheets to create my own stamped planner stickers! Here’s my 2017 planner decked out in DIY stamped stickers!
Create small beverage stickers using either StazOn or VersaFine and color them in with Memento Markers. Small stickers work great for small planner stamps to mark regular events on a planner page.
Another pitfall of stamping directly into a planner is the inevitable mistake or mis-stamp. Stamp calendar layouts onto small, 2” square stamps in order to avoid mistakes in stamping.
List-making is a big part of planning. Using 2” x 4” address labels are perfect for long to-do lists.
Create pearlized stickers by blending Memento and Brilliance inks with an InkBlusher. The resulting blends can be used as-is or layered with white stamps to create a layered look. I halved the layered stickers to get double the stickers for my efforts!
These arched stickers are great for displaying larger images like the Julie Nutting planner girls. Stamp the image with black ink and color with Memento markers.
Spray glossy labels with different shades of Walnut Ink on 2” round labels and let dry. Spraying ink creates randomness on the page which looks like planets once the excess label paper is removed (the spare bits could be cut into interesting shapes with scissors or punches to maximize the supplies).
Once stamped and trimmed down this collection is a lot more manageable to carry for planning on the go compared to the supplies that went into making them!
