Make a Summer Lovin' Mixed Media Calendar

Today is National Best Friends Day! I thought these two dolls could look like a pair of best friends. This mixed media calendar project can be placed on a bulletin board or made in art journal as a two page spread. While project incorporates techniques and textures, it also has the added fun of writing each day’s activities in the small woven calendar boxes. Create one for each month of the year and then bind them together in a diary to look back on later.

Skill: Intermediate
Time: 2-3 hours

Directions

Make a Summer Lovin' Mixed Media Calendar
Step 1

Prepare the background paper. This particular calendar is an 11 x 14 piece of Strathmore 140# Mixed Media paper that had been used to blot off ink from a previous project. I love reusing paper in this way to add to the chaos of mixed media projects. If you are start fresh then use texture paste to create dimension on random parts of the paper. After you have let that dry, now it is time to add color. At the top of the paper, apply Memento Luxe Teal Zeal ink, Bahama Blue Fireworks Spray, and spritz water to allow the colors to blend together. Apply more water and let the inks run down the paper. Use a heat tool to set the color. Next, apply Memento Luxe Morocco ink to the bottom of the paper with a large dauber. Deepen the color by applying Radiant Neon Electric Orange on top of the Morocco ink. Spritz with water, allow the inks to mingle. Blot slightly with a paper towel, and dry with a heat tool. For the last layer, apply Memento Luxe Dandelion to the center of the page, spray with water, allow the color to blend then dry.

Step 2

Use alphabet and number stencils for the date and season. Use Art Ventures Graphite texture paste to make the letters pop forward. Very carefully lift the stenciling pieces straight up and wash them thoroughly to remove all of the paste. Allow to dry thoroughly so as to avoid smearing it.

Step 3

Die cut the butterflies from coordinating patterned paper and set aside. Stamp dolls with StazOn Jet Black ink, color them with Memento Markers and cut them out.

Step 4

Make the woven mat for the calendar days by cutting 5 strips of paper measuring 1 inch x 7 ¼ inches. These strips will be woven across. Then cut 7 strips of the same paper to measure 1 inch x 5 ¾ inches for the downward strips. Secure the weaving with tape on the backside. Use a number stamp set to stamp the calendar numbers in each weave square. Ink the entire piece with Memento Luxe Morocco.

Step 5

Using a strong adhesive, adhere the woven calendar to the background page. Add Washi tape for extra decor. Attach the butterflies across the top on with On Point Glue. Add some butterflies to the skirt and shoes of the doll on the right. Attach the stamped dolls to each side of the calendar. Ink the edges of the mixed media paper with Brilliance Pearlescent Rust ink. Finish with any additional detailing as you feel is right for the design. Have fun!
