Fluttering Butterfly featuring Faux Gelli Printing with VersaMagic and Ink Potion #9 by Mischelle Smith

Our challenge at Imagine this month is motion effects which I translate into ‘cards that move’. I knew a fluttering butterfly was just what I was looking for so I combined it with my ‘faux’ printing obsession to create something with unique, beautiful, one-of-a-kind results. Combining VersaMagic Inks with Ink Potion #9 allowed me to use products I had on hand to create the artsy look I wanted to achieve.

Skill: Beginner
Time: 60 minutes

Step 1

Generously ink craft mat with VersaMagic Ink. Spritz ink with Ink Potion No. 9.

Step 2

Lay stencil on top of spritzed ink. Place the watercolor paper on top of stencil and press gently with your fingers around the stencil. Remove paper and heat set. Repeat steps 1-5 with any additional colors or stencils you wish to add to the print. Stamp print as desired.  Spatter ink onto print using a fan brush and the mixture of ink and Ink Potion #9.  Heat set. Trim paper to size(s) desired.

Once you have the background panel looking as good as you want it to then start working on the butterfly. I choose a beautiful stamp from Stampin Up called Stippled Butterfly. I stamped, fussy cut and inked this butterfly to match the gelli print. Next is the fun/hard part. Create the spring for the butterfly, wrap a thin wire around a pen to create a ‘spring’. Attach a small, punched circle to each end of the wire with adhesive or Tear It Tape. Attach one end of ‘spring’ to the butterfly and the other to the card. Finish the card by embellishing with sequins or glitter as desired.
