Is It a Sign or A Star? It is Actually Both!

M is for Moravian Star Lantern! Not long ago I saw a post on Facebook featuring all sorts of exotic Moravian Star Lanterns and I instantly knew I wanted to attempt to make one. As luck would have it this month one of our themes/challenges was “M is for….”. Well, I did it!

Moravian Star Lantern

The lantern is made entirely from cardstock and I mimicked other patterns that I have seen online. I wanted to make a flat one instead of a full star so I just made it up as I went. But if this seems too difficult then feel free to download a free pdf template to help guide you. I measured out the individual pieces, colored with Delicata and used Imagine’s Vertigo plastic film so it’s transparent, visually interesting and light weight. Each spike has 4 Vertigo windows colored using Fireworks Spray. The lantern lights up with help from a battery-powered LED tea light. The green spike on the side is attached using Velcro dots so it can be popped off for access to the tea light to turn it on and off. It can be easily hung anywhere and even a gentle breeze turns it round and round.

Personalized Decorative Door Sign by Jessica Litman

Personalized gifts are some of my favorite presents because they are unique and thoughtful. When they are handmade, they are an even more thoughtful gift which shows the recipient who much you love and care about them. In this quick lesson on how to craft a personalized sign, I will discuss the ease of this project. First, the most difficult part is gathering all your materials. Once you have finished collecting all the supplies then most of the work is finished and the fun begins.

Start by tracing plaque outline on paper and cutting out the shape. Then cover plaque edges using Tear It Tape and mount your newly cut outline (polka dots in the photo above).  Using two hand-cut Monterey Pine Flowers shapes, ink with Memento Dew Drop Rose Bud ink and ink two Monterey Pine leaves with Memento Dew Drop New Sprout ink. Set aside to dry. Select what name you’d like from wooden letters and ink with VersaMagic Chalk Ink in Purple Hydrangea. Set aside to dry. Staple ribbon to the backside of the plaque to use for hanging on a hook or door knob. Finish the front by gluing the wooden letters, flowers, and leaves to the plaque.  This all should dry fairly quickly and you are ready to gift!

Why Not Do It Yourself with a Bright Hexagon Print

Hexagons are so hot right now! They are a classic shape that is found in nature with honey combs, used in art and design to create interesting patterns and the iconic 5-side shape is also used in signage and information design. I share how to use a basic die cut to create a stamp, blend inks to create dimension and repeat patterns for a lovely finished home decor piece.

Skill: Beginner
Time: 5 minutes

Directions

Die Cut Hexagon Shape
Step 1

Diecut corkboard with hexagon die to create the stamp shape. Attach to stamp block using the Tack ‘N Peel cling sheet. Tack ‘N Peel is reusable and this project could be repeated with any desired shape or die.

Kaleidacolor Inkpad - Caribbean Sea
Step 2

Ink the new hexagon stamp with Kaleidacolor inkpad. The blues and greens will blend and create an ombre effect. You can use this inkpad is several ways. It has a sliding feature so you can push the individual ink colors closer together. Stamp onto white cardstock and continue until you have created a nice pattern. To create a cool effect, use a different part of the inkpad while creating the pattern. Repeat until paper is covered with hexagons.


Step 3

Die cut another hexagon from card stock, adhere to the stamp to create a pop-out element and place onto the pattern using adhesive tape. Frame and enjoy.

Learn How to Create Monday Motivation

Happy Monday! As you plan your week, Check out Jessica Litman's quick tips on a week-long planner layout. blue ink Tsukineko Memento Dew Drops.

Planner spreads don’t have to be overly complicated. In this quick and easy tutorial, all you need are stamps, Xyron Sticker Maker, double-sided Tear It Tape and Memento Dew Drops! Adding your personal touch to your weekly planner never looked so good!

Skill: Beginner
Time: 5 minutes + plan time

Directions

Lilac Walnut ink spray used to color cardstock. cut into strips for planner decor.
Step 1

Start by spraying Lilac Walnut ink on paper and let dry

Step 2

Decorate the bottom of the planner by using a diamond stamp (main image at the top of the page) with Paris Dusk Memento dew drop to create a border at the bottom of the page. This will give it a washi tape look. Create flag stickers using a flag or banner shape stamp ink pad on white card stock.

Fussy cut the flags and run through Xyron sticker maker. Adhere flags to important events for the week.

Step 4

Cut the paper spritz with walnut ink paper into thin strips. Use the strips as event dividers. Line the backside with double-sided Tear It tape and adhering the strips to the planner. Add additional stamps to the planner using the Paris Dusk Memento Dew Drop.

Record or Plan weekly events using the Memento pens. Sit back and enjoy your well planned and beautifully crafted week!

Larger Than Life Technicolor Burlap Banner

Spring fever has definitely sprung with crafting inspiration blogs going wild on the Internet. I have joined the craft craze with this burlap and die cut banner which is perfect to add bright inky colors and floral texture accents to any room in the home. Turn this tutorial into a wall hang, an Easter decoration or make multiple flag pieces for a giant banner.

Skill: Intermediate
Time: 30 minutes

Directions

Step 1

Cut out the floral template from the Silhouette paper cutter. Place the die on the Imagine craft mat. Using the Memento Dew Drop ink pads in Angel Pink, Rose Bud, and Dandelion, cover the floral template with the textured stamps.

Step 2

Lay down another round of stamping and color with Cottage Ivy Memento.

Step 3

Finish the ink layering with Danube Blue Memento which ties together with all the other colors nicely.

Step 4

Using Amplify, add dots to the center of the flowers and to the circle ends of the leafy looking parts (and of course wherever else you see fit). Activate Amplify’s foamy texture quality with a heat tool. Much like embossing powder, you will know visually when the heat is working with Amplify. It’s so fun watching it foam up!

Step 5

Cut a piece of white card stock into a rectangle. Rub the Danube Blue Dew Drop on the edges of the card stock. Write a message or sentiment on the card stock using Memento marker.

Step 6

Fold burlap in half. Cut out a triangle at the bottom to make the flag banner shape. Attach the floral template to the burlap using the decorative brads. Attach card stock to inside the floral template on the burlap using safety pins. Hang on the wall and enjoy!
