See How to Make a Delightful Lapis Blue Jar

The color challenge for April at Imagine is the stunning deep blue color of Lapis Lazuli. With a little research, I discovered that it is semi-precious stone used in ancient mosaics and as a pigment in many well-known paintings. It most likely is what is referred to as sapphire in Biblical times as the sapphire was not known at that time. I was inspired to create a mini Lapis jar from a votive candle holder and large glass drop fashioned into a lid. This simple project is only time-consuming due to dry time and the results are very realistic.

Time: 1 hour + dry time

Directions

Step 1

Apply StazOn Opaque Cotton White directly to the surfaces of the votive candle holder and the glass drop.

Step 2

Use and Ink Blusher to gently move ink and cover the surface of the glass. Set aside to dry.

Step 3

Place StazOn Azure on a plastic surface (for ease of clean-up) and gently apply to the surfaces with an Ink Blusher over the StazOn Cotton White. Work quickly to prevent picking up the Cotton White, some variation will add to the realistic look of the project. Set aside to dry.

Step 4

Add GlazOn Layer Protectant to each surface with an Ink Blusher. Set aside to dry.

Step 5

Apply a second layer of StazOn Azure with an Ink Blusher. Set aside to dry. Apply a second layer of GlazOn and set aside to dry, each successive layer requires more drying time.

Step 6

Place StazOn Metallic Gold on a plastic surface (for ease of clean-up) and apply with crumpled cling wrap to the surfaces to mimic gold flecks in the Lapis stone. Set aside to dry. Apply a final coat of GlazOn and set aside to dry. Stain a small wood bead with StazOn Azure and set aside to dry. Thread wire through bead and twist into a fixture. Adhere to the lid with E600 adhesive. This Lapis and Gold glass jar would make a great addition to a table setting or coffee table with matching ceramics or white flower arrangements. Enjoy!

Share the Best Love with Lapis Lazuli Color Inspiration

For the month of April, we are celebrating the beautiful blue Lapis as color of the month. We love what we have seen so far from our Artist in Residence who took on this color with enthusiasm. For Elina’s project, she creates a monochromatic palette with a blue bird centerpiece and fabric for texture. Gorgeous! For Alison’s project, she took it a step further using the gemstone Lapis Lazuli directly incorporating the stone’s veins of black and gold running through it as inspiration. Both projects create a luster to drool over.

Blue Feathers by Elina Stromberg

I love working with Fireworks Shimmery Craft Sprays. The colors contain not just a beautiful shimmer but lots of pigment, giving a beautiful, vivid finish even when mixed with water. When spraying entire project backgrounds, I like to use a heavy watercolor paper that tolerates wet media well. I often start with misting the paper with plain water before spraying one or several Fireworks colors on the paper. For mixing the colors even further, I add more water, dry the paper with my heat gun and push the wet colors around the paper. This creates beautiful patterns in a watercolor style.

On this project, I added even more metallic shimmer by applying Metallic Silver Creative Medium through a stencil. Creative Mediums are easy to work with and the stenciled patterns air-dry quickly. When using Fireworks Craft Sprays, I often use a large piece of paper and cut the background to size. The leftover pieces can be used for embellishing the inside of the card, or for creating a panel for the stamped sentiment.

Lapis Lazuli Color Inspiration by Alison Heikkila

I start with spritzing Paris Dusk Fireworks spray across watercolor paper at an angle. This created that outward spray effect I wanted. Then I spritzed Desert Sand Fireworks directly above. Next, I stamped the Pretty Poppies set by Stampendous with VersaMark in the lower left corner and heat embossed with Gold embossing powder. While my heat tool was still on, I carefully sprinkled black embossing powder in a few areas. Using Wedding White irRESISTables Pico Embellisher, I colored in a few areas of the poppy to highlight them. After it dried, I applied a second coat to give it more opacity.

My card base was cut out of a deep blue cardstock, and I edged all 4 sides with Golden Glitz Delicata ink for extra gold shimmer. Gold is a perfect compliment to this rich blue and ties this design together very nicely.

Scrapbooking with Stenciled Shades of Green

Stenciling is a great crafting technique that can be used in endless ways. In this tutorial, I chose to use the stencil almost like a stamp by painting it with Tsukineko’s All-Purpose Ink. In my family, we have a camouflage fan and greenery is also Imagine’s color of the month. What better way to celebrate a special Camo Birthday party (and present a tutorial) than by capturing beautiful memories and scrapbooking them with green camo-like texture afterward. Shades of green and gold compliment the photos perfectly and make the special memories come to life.

Step 1

Select green All Purpose inks, Gold Delicata inker, a pipette and a Brushstix for this layout.

Step 2

Use a pipette and add drops of green All-Purpose Inks onto the stencil. Start with the lightest green moving to the darkest.

Step 3

Mist the inks with water until they blend nicely into a liquid ink covering the stencil pattern.

Step 4

Carefully turn over the stencil and stamp the image onto your background cardstock with the inked stencil.

Step 5

Remove the stencil from the background and leave the ink to dry. You can lightly mist the ink with more water to make the colors blend into each other.

Step 6

Place a small drop of Golden Glitz Delicata from the inker onto your craft mat.

Step 7

Lift the Delicata ink with your Brushstix and then draw patterns or scribble onto your background using the gold ink. Leave the ink to dry or heat set using a heat gun. Complete your scrapbook layout using personal photos, green embellishments such as buttons or sequins, and patterned papers such as maps, geometric patterns etc.

Embossed Celtic Knot Card

Happy St Patrick’s Day! On this day, many are wearing green, eating corned beef and (if you are of drinking age) having a green beer! I decided to make a card featuring a Celtic knot, texture, 4-leaf clovers and a gold ribbon. It is so much fun to experiment with the supplies I had on hand which is exactly what I did to create this highly textured card. I had never heated the Creative Medium but I thought it would be worth a shot to see how it performed under high heat. As you can see from the photo it looks amazing and bubbles through the embossing powders to create a lovely hammered texture look. Perfect for Gold Embossing!

Skill: Intermediate
Time: 1.5 hours + cool-down time

Directions

Step 1

Tape black cardstock panel to work surface. Position stencil and tape in place. Use a spatula to spread Gold Creative Medium over the entire card panel.

Step 2

Carefully peel off the stencil. Wash the excess Creative Medium off immediately (very important).

Step 3

Sprinkle Verdigris and Gold Embossing Powders over the Creative Medium. Shake off excess.

Step 4

Heat the embossing powder and Creative Medium until the embossing powders melt and the Creative Medium begins to bubble up. You may continue to heat until satisfied with the texture. Set aside to cool. Do not touch until cool!  The Embossing Powder and Creative Medium will be extremely hot at this point.

Step 5

Die-cut pieces to be added to the card.

Step 6

Use Sponge Dauber to color the clover with Pear Tart, Bamboo Stalk, and Ivy Cottage Memento Ink. Sponge Delicata Golden Glitz on the leafy branches. Bend the small hearts in half and affix to the darker clover pieces using On Point Glue.

 

Step 7

Bend the small hearts in half and affix to the darker clover pieces using On Point Glue.  Mount bubble embossed panel on a plain black card. To finish the overall design, affix the ribbon to the card using Tear It Tape and glue on die-cuts on the embossed panel using On Point Glue.

I love touchy, feely things and wanted to create a project I could use both as a decoration and a gift. This little banner fits the bill. The gold Embossing Powder works so well combined with the texture of the corrugated cardboard. You can easily personalize this by adding a name or sentiment to the chipboard scrap.

Directions

Step 1

Cut a banner shape from a cardboard box flap. Tear off top layers to reveal corrugated inside. Paint front and back of banner with gesso and let dry.

Step 2

Rub VersaMark pad across the front of the banner. Emboss with Gold Embossing Powder. Repeat as needed.

Step 3

Using a DoodleStix – apply Golden Glitz and Silvery Shimmer Delicata in the creases of the banner.

Step 4

Using a foam brush and Modpodge add glitter to the banner. Repeat as needed. Set aside to dry. Use a DoodleStix to apply Golden Glitz Delicata to pink tulle ribbon.

Step 5

Spray Angel Pink Fireworks! to white doily and gold and white ribbon.

Rub Golden Glitz and Silvery Shimmer Delicata onto glitter tipped white feather and chipboard banner scrap.

Step 7

Rub VersaMark onto chipboard scrap. Emboss with Gold Embossing Powder.

Step 8

Now most of the inking is finished,  it’s time to assemble the whole design.  Layer the feather and small gold banner scrap. Add a loop of gold metallic thread, pink tulle ribbon, silver pipe cleaner,  gold and white tulle, pink floss, bells, metallic thread, bows, gold metallic thread, and flowers.  If needed, layer dried banner under a stack of books to flatten. This banner can be re-created in multiple sizes, and colors, to fit any occasion.

Make Decor with a Fantastic Golden Touch

Perhaps Valentine’s Day also needs a touch of home decor to set the right mood for your loved one! Jessica Litman created this shimmery heart banner to add a little pizzazz to the room. We imagine this banner would look great in combination with flowers and a card. Kyriakos Pachadiroglou took a more earthy route and created a wood block piece that expresses sentiments associated with our Heart of Gold theme.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, Jessica Litman felt that creating a banner to decorate would be the perfect fit for the holiday! This project allows a ton of flexibility because the banner can be as long or small as space allows! Jessica started by embossing heart stamps using Delicata White Shimmer and Clear Embossing Powder creating the background on black paper. Delicata is a metallic pigment ink and works great with embossing powders. She then cut the banner shapes and attached the gold heart to the center and finished the banner with a sewing machine. If you do not have a sewing machine then attaching a string to the back with adhesives should also work.

Kyriakos Pachadiroglou uses Goosebumps and walnut ink on wood for this lovely piece of home decor.

Describe a person with a heart of gold and you will get words likes “believe”, “respect”, “patience”, “care”, “love” and much more. Kyriakos choose these words to convey a person with such qualities. He marked these sentiments on a slice of wood and enhanced it by a golden heart and embossing powder. Words are hand lettered with a paintbrush with the magic of GooseBumps and then covered with Walnut Ink to create a resist effect which almost looks hand carved.
