Create Cuteness with a Die Inlay Technique

Isn’t the ‘Faye’ stamp set by Waffle Flower just adorable! Last month, I used this cute little monkey image for decorating a mini purse (see link below) and now I wanted to add to that with a fun inlay technique using Waffle Flower’s Cross Stitches Heart die. These cross stitch stamp styles are unique to Waffle Flower. They are so cute and work really well with any theme. Enjoy!

Skill: Intermediate
Time: 1 hour + drying time

Directions

Step 1

Cover the patterned paper with a thin layer of clear gesso. Spread the gesso with a brush or palette knife.

Stamp the cute little monkey on watercolor paper with Onyx Black VersaFine ink.
Step 2

Stamp the cute little monkey on watercolor paper with Onyx Black VersaFine ink.

VersaColor Brown, VersaColor Raspberry, VersaMagic Thatched Straw, and VersaMagic Gingerbread
Step 3

Color the image with VersaColor Brown, VersaColor Raspberry, VersaMagic Thatched Straw, and VersaMagic Gingerbread. Use the craft mat as palette. Ink directly onto the craft mat, mix and apply the colors with a water brush. Dry with a heat gun, and fussy cut with scissors.

Step 4

Color the background with Fireworks Lilac Posies (this can also be applied to the craft mat first and used with a Fantastix or waterbrush). Dry with a heat gun, and die-cut with Waffle Flower’s Cross Stitched Heart die on the center of the card. Set aside the extra “x” Cross Stitch pieces from this cut. They will be used later for embellishments.

Step 5

Cut card to desired size. Mat on dark red cardstock using Tear It Tape.

Step 6

Die-cut the Cross Stitch Heart again from dark red cardstock. Remove paper gently from around the die, leaving little cross-stitches on the die. Place the die upside down on the die-cut heart, press cross-stitches through the die with a toothpick. Crosses will stick on the two-sided tape used for matting the card. This will essentially fill in the shapes with a new paper color creating a gorgeous effect.

Step 7

Glue light colored die-cut Cross Stitched “x” from the first cut in a previous step on the background. Make a few Fireworks ink splashes with a small brush. Decorate card with stamped texts and stamped flowers. Stamp the sentiment text on a piece of white cardstock, glue with the main image on the card front. When you have all the elements where you’d like them then mat card on white card base.
