And Now More Momentous Mother’s Day Magic

Mother’s Day is certainly a special time of year! It is a holiday that doesn’t require a whole lot of planning, just a whole lot of love! We reflect on what we like and appreciate about our moms and with today’s handmade selections it is obvious the feelings are special. Elina Stromberg creates a beautiful nature themed card and Martha lays down creative techniques that give a Mother’s Day card a textured look.

Beautiful Bird Mother’s Day Card

Beautiful Bird Mother’s Day Card by Elina Stromberg

Here in Finland, like in most countries, Mother’s Day is celebrated the second Sunday in May. Since childhood, my mother has received a handmade card from me and this year will not be an exception. Mum, this card is made with love just for you!

I wanted to make the card cute and feminine and thought that the soft pastel colors of DCWV cardstock pieces were just the right choice for this project. Their beautiful color palette work so well together! I started by stamping the bird image on pink cardstock and added some color and shading with Memento inks and a water brush. I stamped the branch, leaves, and flowers, cut the pieces out, and glued the pieces together before placing them on the card front. White color on the background panel is Moonlight White Brilliance ink that I applied on the pink cardstock right from the pad. The textured panel underneath is made by stamping doily images on pink cardstock. I hope she will like my card!

Mother of Pearl Technique by Martha Lucia Gomez

Mother of Pearl Technique by Martha Lucia Gomez

On today’s Mother’s Day project,  I am creating the Mother of Pearl technique on magenta cardstock with Frost White All-Purpose Ink. I love the texture and shimmer this technique creates and feel it adds the extra special touch to this handmade card.  Here is how to do it.

Take a piece of regular card stock and sponge it with two or three colors of Memento Ink. I selected Lulu Lavender and Lilac Posies. I started with the Lulu Lavendar and then enhanced the tone with the Lilac Posies. This helps add a sense of color depth to the background. For the pearl effect, put a few drops of All-Purpose Ink Frost White over your mat and apply with a ball of plastic wrap. The unruly nature of the plastic wrap will create chaotic texture and the shimmer of the pearl color ink will pop forward. This papercrafting hack is simple, yet requires some thinking outside of the box!

While the background dries, I sprayed a piece of white cardstock with four different colors of Fireworks Shimmery Craft Sprays. Then I stamped flowers using VersaMark and heat embossed with White Embossing Powder. I fussy cut the flowers and detailed the inside of the flowers using a tiny paint brush and Firework Lilac Posies. I added a decorated tag border to frame my sentiment, pasted with Tear It! Tape and stamped the sentiment with VersaFine Imperial Purple. Finally, I added the flowers using dimensional dots and added dark green leaves behind the flowers and transparent sequins using On Point Glue. All of these techniques are so easy, and lots of fun, don’t you think?!
