Let’s Make a Fairy Birthday Card

By Kathi Rerek

I recently saw a video where the owner of Lavinia Stamps created a card using Brilliance Moonlight White and a silhouette stamp to create a magical scene. I decided to bring it to the next level by creating a scene using Brilliance and VersaMagic inks.

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Time: 1 hour

Step 1:
Place a piece of repositionable label paper onto a craft mat. Use a craft knife and a curvy ruler to cut the piece of label paper. Both pieces will be used as masks.

Step 2:
Cut a piece of Black Mixed Media paper to 5.25” square. Adhere one of the two masks horizontally across the square.

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Hint of Pesto VersaMagic Ink below the mask. Remove the mask and retain. Heat set.

VersaMagic Inks are wonderful on dark backgrounds.

Step 3:
Adhere the second repositionable masks over the sponged green background.

Use repositionable tape to secure the largest circle-in-a-square stencil from the Circle Mask and Stencil Set to the image panel.

Use a Sponge Dauber to generously apply Moonlight White Brilliance ink to the circular center of the stencil.

Remove the stencil and heat set.

Step 4:
Keeping the repositonable mask in place, position the moon face stencil from the Moon Layering Mask Set.

Sponge Moonlight White Brilliance Ink over the stencil. Use a slight scrubbing motion to remove some of the ink from the moon craters.

Remove the stencil and the mask. Heat set.

Step 5:
Secure the image panel onto the stamping platform. Position the Fairy Dust fairy so that she’s sitting on the green area of the image panel.

Ink the stamp with Nocturne VersaFine Clair ink and stamp. Re-ink the stamp and stamp until you have a good impression.

Remove the stamp. Heat set the image panel.

Step 6:
Use Fantastix to apply Pearlescent Orchid, Lavender, and Sky Blue Brilliance Inks to the fairy’s wings.
Heat set.
Trim image panel to 5” square.

Step 7:
(Not Photographed)
Position the Birthday sentiment stamp facedown at the top left of the image panel. Position the Fairy Dust sentiment stamp facedown at the bottle right of the image panel. Ink both stamps with Frost Dazzle VersaMark ink. Sprinkle white detail embossing powder onto the sentiments then dump off the excess. Heat set.

Step 8:
Press two fingers onto the back of the polymer Stars stamp, ink the stamp with Moonlight White Brilliance Ink pad, and stamp. Randomly stamp the stars and the bursts around the moon.

Since the polymer stamp will stick to your fingers you will have more control of stamping. Your image might not be perfect, but that’s okay!

Step 9:
Use chalk pencils to add grass and flower stems to the green area of the image panel.

Step 10:
Use Fantastix or pointy cosmetic swabs to apply dots of Mango Madness and Pink Grapefruit VersaMagic ink to some of the tufts of grass/flower stems. Heat set.

Step 11
(not photograhed)
Apply tiny dots of On Point Glue over the “fairy dust” on the image. Shake some glitter onto the wet glue, Let sit then dump off the excess. Apologies for the lack of a photo.

Step 12:
Cut a piece of Raven cardstock to 5.5” x 11”, score at 5.5”, and fold to form a 5.5” square cad.
Cut a piece of the blue glitter paper to 5.25” square.

Use Tear-It Tape to adhere the glitter paper to the front of the card. The tape is perfect for this application as the back of the glitter paper is slick. Use Tear-It ! Tape to adhere the image panel to the blue glitter paper.

I Love Mew – A Valentine’s Day Card

By Kathi Rerek

Here’s a punny Valentine’s Day card that showcases the blending of the new Baby Pink VersaFine Clair Ink with the Charming Pink VersaFine Clair Ink.  I also used Purell to create a fun ghosting technique!

Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 45 minutes

Instructions:

Steps 1A and B:

Use a make-up brush to apply Baby Pink VersaFine Clair Ink to a piece of white cardstock. Start at the top of the panel and work downwards.  The make-up brush creates soft textured look on the cardstock. Continue to brush downwards until the brush doesn’t put ink onto the cardstock (1A)

Use the same make-up brush to apply Charming Pink VersaFine Clair Ink from the base of the cardstock panel, blending as you go. (1B)

Steps 2A and B:

Place the Staggered Hearts stencil over the inked panel. (2A)

Add Purell to a dry baby wipe until it’s saturated then use the wipe to apply the Purell over the stencil onto the cardstock. The Purell will lift the VersaFine Clair Ink, creating ghosted hearts on the background. Heat setting will accentuate the ghosted effect while setting the ink. (2B)

Step 3:

Place the inked cardstock panel onto a stamping platform. Use Nocturne VersaFine Clair Ink to stamp the cat. Re-ink and stamp again if necessary for a crisp image.  Remove the image panel and use a paint brush dipped and the ink pad to do any necessary touch ups to the image. Heat set.

Step 4:

Use Prismacolor markers to color the cat’s eyes, taking care to avoid the black ink and contaminate your markers. Use a white gel pen to add highlights to the cat’s eyes.  No photos. Sorry.

Step 5:

Use alphabet dies and a speech bubble die to cut black cardstock. Use a flag and a heart die to to cut to cut extra inked cardstock from Step 1. Smoosh the heart die-cut onto the Charming Pink VersaFine Clair inkpad. Trim the ends off of the flag die-cut and edge with Charming Pink VersaFine Clair Ink. Adhere the letter die-cuts and the heart to the pink strip, then adhere to the black speech bubble die-cut.

Step 6:

Use Nocturne VersaFine Clair Ink to stamp the cat onto the scrap of repositionable sticker paper. Fussy-cut the sticker paper along the bottom and place it over its counterpart as a mask. Place a strip of repositionable Scotch Tape across the image panel. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Charming Pink VersaFine Clair Ink over the tape and the masked cat paws to the bottom of the image panel.

Remove the tape and the mask over the cat. Use Use a Sponge Dauber to edge the image panel with Charming Pink VersaFine Clair Ink.

Step 7:

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Baby Pink VersaFine Clair Ink to the outside .5” perimeter of  an A2 card. Heat set.

Step 8:

Cut a panel of black cardstock to 4” x 5.25”. Use Tear It! Tape to mat the image panel with the black cardstock, adhere the matted image panel to the card, and adhere the speech bubble die-cut as shown. Use the sentiment sticker to finish the card.

Grumpy Kitty Christmas Card

By Kathi Rerek

Here’s a snarky and fun Christmas card that shows how well VersaFine Clair Inks work on Kraft Cardstock!

Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 45 minutes

Instructions:

Step 1:
Use Tuxedo Black Memento Ink to stamp the Pissy Kitty twice — once onto Kraft cardstock and once onto repositionable sticker paper.

Step 2:
Use Copic markers to color the kitty. Use white gel pen to add highlights to his eyes.

Step 3:
Fussy-cut the sticker paper version of the kitty and place it over its counterpart as a mask.

Step 4:
Place a ruler horizontally across the image panel, right below the masked cat. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Grass Green VersaFine Clair Ink over the ruler onto the bottom of the image panel.

Step 5:
Use low tack tape to secure the image panel to the back of the Grunge Notes Stencil. Secure the stencil to the craft mat with magnets. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Strawberry VersaFine Clair Ink over the stencil onto the image panel. Remove the stencil and the masks, edge the panel using both Strawberry and VersaFine Clair Inks, then heat set the image panel.

Step 6:
Squeeze a few dollops of Cloud White VersaMagic Ink into a little dish. Use a paint brush to apply white paint to the pom-pom and brim of the Santa hat. Use both Strawberry and VersaFine Clair Inks to edge the image panel.

Steps 7:
Cut a 4” x 5.25” panel from Desert Storm Cardstock to create your own patterned background. Use low tack tape to secure the image panel to the back of the Holly Background Stencil. Secure the stencil to the craft mat with magnets.

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Grass Green VersaFine Clair Ink over the holly leaves of the stencil onto the background panel (7A). Use a small brush to apply Green Oasis VersaFine Ink, which is a slightly darker green, to the outside of the holly leaves on the stencil to add a touch of shading (Sorry. No photo).

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Strawberry VersaFine Clair Ink over the stencil’s holly berries onto the background panel (7B). Remove the stencil, edge with Grass Green VersaFine Ink, and heat set.

Step 8:
Use Grass Green VersaFine Clair Ink to stamp the “Fa La La” sentiment onto a scrap of Kraft cardstock. Remove the stamped scrap from the stamping platform. Heat set.

Use a speech bubble die to cut the sentiment. Edge the die-cut with Strawberry VersaFine Clair Ink.

Step 9:
Use Tear It! Tape to adhere the sentiment, image panel, and background panel to an A2 Kraft card.

Thanksgiving Die-Cut Wreath Card with VersaFine Clair Inks

By Kathi Rerek

VersaFine Clair Ink is wonderful for coloring die-cuts easily. The VersaFine Clair Inks blend beautifully so you can create new colors to extend their versatility.

The method I used for all of the die-cuts was to place the die-cut(s) onto a Gel Press which will hold them in place while ink is being dabbed onto the die-cut(s) with Sponge Daubers.

I used a separate Sponge Dauber for each color to avoid contaminating the ink pads. I applied the lighter ink color onto the die-cut first and used a tissue to wipe excess ink off of the Gel Press. Darker ink was applied to the die-cut next and the same tissue was used to wipe up excess ink.  If more ink was required to color the die-cut or to improve blending, this process was repeated. Photos below will illustrate my method.

Clean the Gel Press with hand sanitizer between colors and die-cuts.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 1 hour

Instructions:

Steps 1:

Use all the dies in the Vault Wreath set to cut all the dies from smooth white cardstock at least three times.

Place the wreath die-cut onto the Gel Press, which will keep it in place. Use a Sponge Dauber to dab Acorn VersaFine Clair Ink onto the wreath (1A). Use another Sponge Dauber to dab PineCone VersaFine Clair Ink onto the wreath blending as you go (1B). Remove the first wreath, set it aside, and wipe the Gel Press clean. You can use hand sanitizer if you like.

Place the second wreath die-cut onto the Gel Press. Use Sponge Daubers to dab Sand Dune (1C) then Portobello (1D) VersaFine Clair Inks onto the die-cut. Remove the second wreath, set it aside, and wipe the Gel Press clean.

Place the third wreath die-cut onto the Gel Press. Use Sponge Daubers to dab Golden Meadow (1E) and Acorn (1F) VersaFine Clair Inks onto the die-cut. Remove the second wreath, set it aside, and wipe the Gel Press clean.

Steps 2:

Place the cone flower (bottom left of the Gel Press), cone part (top right of the Gel Press), the small round center of the sunflower (top left of the Gel Press), and the sunflower (bottom right of the Gel Press) die-cuts onto the Gel Press.

Use Sponge Daubers to dab Golden Meadow (2A) and Cheerful (2B) to the Cone Flower die-cuts. Use Sponge Daubers to to apply Summertime (2C) and Chianti (2D) VersaFine Clair Inks to the bottom edges of the cone flowers.  Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Summertime (2F) VersaFine Clair Ink to the spiky flower.

Remove the flower die-cuts and leave the centers on the top of the Gel Press. Wipe the Gel Press clean.

Here are the color combinations for the rest of the die-cuts. Remember to firmly place the die-cuts onto the Gel Press, use Sponge Daubers to dab the ink onto the die-cuts, and to clean the Gel Press between sets of die-cuts.

  • Top of the Cone Flowers:  Use Acorn VersaFine Clair Ink.
  • Sunflower centers: Use Summer Meadow and Acorn VersaFine Clair Inks.
  • Spiky Flowers:  Hawthorn Rose and Tulip Red VersaFine Clair Inks.
  • Five petal leaves: Verdant VersaFine Clair Ink
  • Ferns: Avocado and Arctic Blue VersaFine Clair Inks
  • Pointed Oval Leaves:  Avocado VersaFine Clair Ink onto the die-cuts.
  • Branches: Shady Lane VersaFine Clair Ink
  • Oak Leaves: Golden Meadow, Cheerful, Summertime, and Chianti VersaFine Clair Inks
  • Bottom of Acorn: Acorn and Pinecone VersaFine Clair Inks
  • Top of Acorn: Portobello and Pinecone VersaFine Clair Ink
  • Bow: Summertime, Cheerful, Tulip Red, and Chianti VersaFine Clair Inks

Step 3:

Use On-Point Glue to adhere the wreaths atop one another.

Step 4:

Roll a 4” brayer over the Cheerful VersaFine Clair Ink. Roll the brayer onto scrap paper to reduce the amount of ink on it. Roll the brayer to the Gel Press. Place a piece of 5” x 7” white cardstock onto the Gel Press and pull the print that will become the background panel.

Steps 5:

Use a make-up brush and tap lightly onto the Strawberry VersaFine Clair Inkpad. Brush off the excess onto the scrap paper. Brush the ink along the top of the Gel Press (5A). Place background panel on Gel Press and pull print. Take a second make-up brush and tap it lightly onto the Grass Green VersaFine Clair Inkpad. Brush off the excess onto the scrap paper. Brush the ink along the bottom of the background panel (5B)

Step 6:

Spray with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to slightly blend and mottle inked background.

Step 7:

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Acorn VersaFine Clair ink around the outer perimeter of a white 5” x 7” card. Heat set.

Step 8:

Use Tear It! Tape to adhere the layers of the card.

Steps 9:

Use Sponge Daubers to color an Idea-ology Sticker (9A). Use a second Sponge Dauber to edge the sticker (9B).

Make a Ouija Board Halloween Card with VersaFine Clair Inks

By Kathi Rerek

Halloween is the time of the year when the veil is the thinnest and people seek out spooky experiences. Here’s a card with NO stamping that uses both the old and new VersaFine Clair Inks with stencils and die-cuts!

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 1.5 hours

Instructions:

Step 1:
Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Sand Dune VersaFine Clair ink to a piece of white cardstock.

Step 2:
Use low-tack tape to secure the inked cardstock to the back of a wood-grain stencil. Use a sponge dauber to apply Sand Dune VersaFine Clair over the stencil onto the cardstock to create a subtle wood grained look. Remove the stencil and heat set the cardstock.

Steps 3A through 3E:
Use low-tack tape to secure the image panel to the back of the Ouija Board Stencil. Different colors of VersaFine Clair Inks and Moonlight White Brilliance ink will be applied to various areas of the stencil. I ended up adding Starlite Silver over the Moonlight White to add more contrast. Sorry there’s no photo.

Place Post-It Notes to protect areas of the stencil and keep a paper towel at hand to wipe excess ink off of the stencil to avoid unwanted ink transfer.

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Cheerful VersaFine Clair to the sun area of the stencil. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Moonlight White Brilliance Ink to the moon and the clouds area of the stencil (3A).

Use Sponge Daubers to apply Grass Green and Strawberry VersaFine Clair Inks to the “Yes” and “No” words on the stencil (3B)

Use Sponge Daubers to apply Purple Delight and Monarch VersaFine Clair Inks to the the alphabet on the stencil (3C). Remember to use a paper towel to wipe away excess ink.

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Summertime VersaFine Clair Ink to the numbers on the stencil (3D).

Use Fantastix to apply Lilac Bloom, Bali Blue, Summertime, and Cheerful VersaFine Inks to the stars on the stencil (3E)

Remove the stencil and thoroughly heat set the image panel.

Step 4:
Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Lilac Bloom VersaFine Clair Ink to a piece of Mixed Media paper to create the background panel. Heat set.

Steps 5A and 5B:
Use low-tack tape to secure the Lilac Bloom inked paper to the back of the Dynamic Stencil.

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Purple Delight VersaFine Clair Ink randomly over the stencil (5A) onto the background panel. Use a separate Sponge Dauber to apply Monarch VersaFine Clair Ink over the the rest of the stencil (5B) onto the background panel.  Remove the stencil and heat set the panel.

Step 6:
Use the skeletal hand cutting die to cut three hands from white cardstock.

Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Wheat VersaMagic Ink to the edges of the hands, fingers, and wrist bones. You can use the pointed edge of the DewDrop Inkpad to reach between the fingers! When the bones are aged to your liking, heat set all three hands then set them aside.

Step 7:
Cut a piece of white cardstock to 5.25” x 3.875”. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Summertime VersaFine Clair Ink to the outer .5” of the panel. Heat set. Use this panel to mat the Ouija Board Panel, then adhere the matted Ouija Board panel to the stenciled background panel. Sorry that there’s no photo.

Steps 8A and B:
Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Bali Blue VersaFine Clair Ink to a sentiment sticker (8A). Heat set.

Use a Flag Die to cut white cardstock. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Lilac Bloom VersaFine Clair Ink to the die-cut. Heat set.

Adhere the sticker onto the die-cut flag. Set aside.

Step 9:
Press the plastic planchette facedown onto the Pumpkin StazOn Inkpad. Smoosh it around.Carefully remove and allow to dry.

Steps 10A and 10B:
Place dimensional foam adhesive to the back of all three skeletal hands. Fold all the fingers, except the index fingers, backwards at the second joint, and press them onto the adhesive foam. You can add a piece of Tear It! Tape over them to keep them in place. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Sand Dune VersaFine Clair Ink to the backs of the fingers and the joints to further “age” them (10A).

Use On Point Glue to attach the Planchette so that it’s pointing at the “H” for Halloween. Apply On Point Glue to the back of index fingertips, remove the tape backing, and adhere the skeletal hands as shown (10B).

Step 11:
Create a 5” x 7” card from white textured cardstock. Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Monarch VersaFine Clair Ink to the outer .5” of the card. Heat set.

Step 12:
Use Tear It! Tape to adhere the layers of the card.

Zombie Graveyard Halloween Card with VersaMagic Inks

By Kathi Rerek

I might be an introvert, but I do love to make scenes — in card form. Here’s a Halloween card created with VersaMagic and VersaFine Clair inks, stamping, and some die-cuts.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 1.5 hours

Instructions:

Step 1:
Cut a piece of Bristol paper to 4.75” x 6.75”. Use the Boneyard Edgers die to cut removable sticker paper and place along the bottom of the image panel. Place low tack tape below it.

Use the 1” circle punch to punch the sticker paper and adhere it to the upper left hand side as shown.

Step 2:
Use a Sponge Dauber to apply Night Sky VersaMagic Ink over the masked images onto the background. Heat set.

Step 3:
Spray a little water into a small container. Squeeze a few drops of Moonlight White VersaMagic Re-inker into the pot. Use a paint brush to mix the water and the ink. Tap the inky paintbrush over the night sky background to add splatter to look like stars.

Step 4:
Remove the sticker masks from the moon and from the cemetery.Smoosh the Jumbo Java VersaMagic Dewdrop Inkpad onto a piece of acetate. Lightly mist with water. Use a paintbrush to paint the tree in the graveyard. Heat set. Clean and dry the acetate.

Steps 5A and 5B:
Smoosh the Hint of Pesto VersaMagic Dewdrop Inkpad onto the cleaned piece of acetate. Lightly mist with water. Use a clean paintbrush to apply green ink at the top of the hill below the tombstones, crosses, gate, and tree (5A). Use a Fantastix to apply Spanish Olive VersaMagic Ink to blend this lighter ink below the ink applied in Step 5A. Continue apply the Spanish Olive Versa Magic Ink horizontally to fill in the base of the card and create the cemetery lawn. Heat set the image panel.

Step 6:
Place the image panel onto the base of a stamping platform secured with magnets and low-tack tape.

Position the clear Zombie stamps from the Zombie Party Clear Stamp Set facedown as desired on the cemetery lawn. Position the Bat Colony Clear Stamp facedown over the moon and sky.

Press the platform’s base onto the back of the stamps. Lift. Ink the stamps with Nocturne VersaFine Clair Ink and stamp. Re-ink and stamp if necessary to attain solid black images. Heat set the panel.

Step 7:
Trim the image panel to 4.625” x 6.625”. Use Nocturne VersaFine Clair Ink to edge the image panel. Cut a piece of orange cardstock to 4.75” x 6.75”. Sorry that there’s no photo.

Step 8:
Apply Tear It! Tape to cover the reverse of a piece of orange cardstock. Use the “Happy Halloween” sentiment dies to cut orange cardstock. Remove the tape’s backing and adhere the sentiment as shown.

Step 9:
Use Tear It! Tape to adhere the layers of the card.
