Color of the Month for August is Lavender

The Color of the Month for August is Lavender. We love this soft purple color and with summer in full gear, the lavender is blooming in full. We are reminded of how well this color compliments green leaves and also is the favorite of honey bees. With cardmaking and scrapbooking, lavender is a must-have to express sensitivity and delight! Imagine and Tsukineko offer several products to help achieve this beautiful color. Ink swatches such as Memento in Lulu Lavender, Brilliance in Pearlescent Purple, and All-Purpose Ink in Wisteria are great examples! In the meantime, we have a couple of sneak peeks of this month’s tutorials for you!

Send A Loved One a “Thinking of You” Greeting

The summer is here and July is a perfect month to experiment with quick cardmaking projects like this. Today, I am showing you how to color and give a gold metallic effect with different colors and texture of inks. Enjoy!

Time: 1 hour

Directions


Step 1

Stamp the flowers and leaves images over watercolor paper using VersaMark and heat emboss using Gold Embossing Powder. In my project, I am using a combination of the stamps Wild Rose from Pretty Pink Posh and Loving Mom from Kennedy Grace Creations.


Step 2

Select the colors of Delicata Ink that you want to use and dilute them with a few drops of Ink Potion No. 9. To color the flowers, I used Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green in Delicata. For the leaves, I used Dark Brown Shimmer. Fussy cut the flowers and leaves and set aside for a while.


Step 3

Create a card base using whisper white cardstock. Dilute Rose Gold Delicata Ink with Ink Potion No. 9 and using a paint brush to splatter color over the card base. If you want you can also add a few splatters of Dark Brown Shimmer Delicata Ink.


Step 4

Stamp the sentiment “Thinking of You” using VersaFine Clair Pinecone and emboss with Clear Embossing Powder. Finish your card by adding embellishments like gold metallic thread, arrange the flowers and leaves with glue dots and double-sided foam tape. As final touch paste gold sequins using On Point Glue.

Create a High Contrast Card with Gold Embossing

The color challenge for July is Golden Glow and I immediately thought of Gold Embossing! I was so excited because I love Clean and Simple cards and I think using gold as your main color allows for a clean and simple design that is still sure to wow the recipient. While my card is in the style of CAS it is a bit of an advanced technique as it actually has three layers of paper! If you are looking for a beautiful design to create for a special occasion this White and Gold theme is an elegant combination. Enjoy!

Directions


Step 1

With masking tape create a border on the bottom of your card base. The width of the border depends on the size of the die cut letters that you want to use. In my project, I created a 1 inch border because the size of my die cuts is Jumbo. Ink the masked area directly with the VersaMark Inkpad. Cover the inked area with Gold Embossing Powder and melt the powder with the heat tool.


Step 2

Set the card base aside. Use large die letters to cut the letters “H” and “I” for the greeting. Align the letters over the card border and mask the lower portion with masking tape to match the card base border. (I used the same piece of masking tape for step one and two.)


Step 3

Cut a piece of whisper white cardstock to match the same area that is still white on the card base. In my sample, the card is a standard size, so my top layering piece is 5.5″ x 3.25″. Leaving the masking tape attached to the front side, apply On Point Glue on the back of the letters, above the masked area only. Paste the letters onto the separate layer aligning the masked area to the lower edge of your cardstock layer.


Step 4

Stamp a floral image on the left corner of the top cardstock piece with VersaMark and emboss with Gold Embossing Powder. Add a fun foam white layer behind the decorated layer and tape over the card base aligning the gold borders.

Create A Clean And Simple Artist Card

I love to create Clean & Simple cards, but at the same time, I love to use embossing techniques and different colors on my designs. Combining both styles in a single card is not complicated when you have materials like VersaFine Clair and Fireworks Sprays. This is a single layer card created with the stamp sets God’s Masterpiece and Broken Brick Background from Joy Clair Stamps. To make it, I selected Whisper White cardstock and different colors of VersaFine Clair Inks.

Directions


Step 1

Create the base of the card using Whisper White cardstock. The size of my card is a regular size 4.25″ x 11″ with a score in 5.5″.


Step 2

Stamp the Broken Brick Background on the upper part of the card using VersaFine Clair Morning Mist and cover it with clear embossing powder. Melt the powder with the heat tool.


Step 3

Arrange the rest of the images on your stamping tool. I am using the Stamparatus from Stampin’ Up but any stamping tool is good for that.


Step 4

Continue inking only the stamps that will be the focus of the card. For that, I used VersaFine Clair Nocturne and Embossing Powder in Clear. Continue the stamping process inking one by one the additional stamps with different tones of VersaFine Clair Ink and emboss them with clear embossing powder.


Step 5

Remember that one of the virtues that VersaFine Clair has is that you have more time to emboss your images. As you noticed, one of my main images overlaps the brick background. This is the moment when you said..”Uhh?! How do I fix that?!” But don’t worry I will show you the solution. You only need to continue with the process.


Step 6

To “resolve or cover” my mistake, I stamped in a separate piece of Whisper White card stock the overlap part of the image, with the same ink and embossing. Then I fussy cut it with my scissors to use only the part that I need to replace. To give color to some of the stamped images, I applied and mixed the Fireworks colors with a paintbrush.


Step 7

Why shouldn’t a single layer card have texture? I definitely loved making this project. It kept the concept of a lot of white and no paper layers to be in the category of CAS.

Create an Awesome Watercolored Background with Kaleidacolor Ink. This handmade card also has a beautiful vellum sentiment embossing in Gold.

Remind someone that they are awesome with this Sea Breeze easy watercolored background with gold embossing vellum sentiment. The color challenge this month is sea tones. I decided to place my design on decorated paper and not over regular cardstock. I am using one of the sea colors included on the Serenade collection from Quick Quotes Scrapbook and the Kaleidacolor Inkpad in Caribbean Sea. It’s a perfect match to get all kinds of lovely tropical sea colors!

Skill: Beginner
Time: 30 minutes + dry time

Directions


Step 1

Cut the layer of decorated paper to 4-1/4” x 5-1/2”. Stamp the image background using VersaMark. Sprinkle on white embossing powder and shake off excess. Melt the powder with a heat tool.


Step 2

Ink your mat with Kaleidacolor Ink in Caribbean Sea. Mix and extend the inks by spraying some Ink Potion No.9 on your ink.


Step 3

Rub your stamped layer over the mix of inks. Let variation in color occur, and even allow some areas to have the base paper show through. That’s why we didn’t use white cardstock! Let the paper dry naturally or speed the process with the heat tool.


Step 4

With Memento Markers in Pear Tart and New Sprout enhance the sea colors on the leafy parts of your stamped image. Resize your layer and paste it over a whisper white card base.


Step 5

Stamp your message or sentiment on vellum using VersaMark. Coat with Gold Embossing Powder and shake off excess. Melt the powder with a heat tool. Paste the sentiment over the card with glue dots.

Project Swap: Create a “Dear Friend” Greeting Card

Welcome back for another Artist Project Swap with Martha and Steph. For the Month of May, we challenged our artists to exchange tutorials and create each other’s designs in order to see how each of our artists interprets style and choices. The receiving artist did not know who designed the project, nor did they receive any images! In today’s post, Steph writes the directions and recommended supplies list and Martha created the project.

Create a “Dear Friend” Greeting Card by Martha Lucia Gomez

This month the Artist in Residence team made a wonderful exercise or swap project challenge. Each designer created a project and send the instructions and photo to our coordinator. Then we received another project to follow the instructions, without a photo or who exactly created it. This is the swap project I received and can you believe that after made the card I discovered who was the author of the instructions…I recognize the style!

Directions


Step 1

Create the base of the card using olive card stock. The size of my card is a regular size 4-1/4″ x 11″ with a score at 5-1/2″ for the centerfold. Cut a white cardstock of 4″x 5-1/4″. Place a background pattern stencil on the white panel and ink with Brilliance in Pearlescent Lime.


Step 2

Ink sheer ribbon with lime ink. When dry, wrap around the matted panel. Knot with twine on the right side of the panel. Added the panel to the card with foam adhesives.


Step 3

Using a stamp positioning tool and a flower stamp, ink the steam and leaves with the Brilliance in Pearlescent Lime. Ink the flower with the Memento Marker in Angel Pink. Stamp image onto white cardstock. Re-stamp the flower using the Memento Marker in Rose Bud around the edges. Fussy cut the flower.


Step 4

Die cut brown and white cardstock shapes with graduating sized dies. Adhere together with Tear It Tape. Place on left side of the card with foam adhesives, overlapping the ribbon. Trim shapes as needed to align with a patterned piece on the left edge. Adhere the stamped flower on top. I used square cross stitched die cuts from Gina Marie Designs. Stamp “Just For You” sentiment. Ink edges and mat with brown cardstock. Add near the top of the card with foam adhesives. Reading through Steph’s instructions I realized I didn’t have a “Just For You” sentiment so I replaced with “Dear Friend” which is just as nice.

Definitely, it was a very good experience to swap projects and the best part that was I could replace materials and give to the project my personal touch.
