Create a Copper and Teal Father's Day Steampunk Card

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, but I thought I’d get a head start on a steampunk/industrial Father’s Day card. Depending on the mom – it could be for either! These projects are always fun because you get to make things look grungy and metallic with inks, embossing powders and embellishments. By altering corrugated cardboard with different craft inks, you can transform scraps into a cool background. See how I made it!

Skill: Intermediate
Time: 1.5 hours

Directions


Step 1

Select a piece of corrugated cardboard.


Step 2

Spray Ink Potion No. 9 onto the corrugated cardboard. This helps the ink spread evenly and reduces harsh spray splotches. Spray Walnut Ink on the corrugated cardboard randomly. The ink will seep into the crevices. This imitates a timeworn metal look. To remove ink from the crevices use a dry brush to lift up the ink, then dry onto a paper towel. Dry paper.


Step 3

Rip the top and bottom edges.


Step 4

Ink the corrugated cardboard with Champagne Delicata and Turquoise Gem VersaMagic inks on the raised surface. The Turquoise Gem ink imitates a patina look while the Champagne ink imitates bits of metal shining through. Dry paper.


Step 5

Ink the edges with the Rich Cocoa Memento Luxe ink. Dry paper


Step 6

Ink gears with VersaMark ink, add Imagine’s Embossing Powder in Gold and heat set. Repeat this step using the Celestial Copper and Silver embossing powders.


Step 7

To vary the look of the gears, create a patina and copper gear. Ink the gear with Turquoise Gem VersaMagic ink.


Step 8

Add Imagine’s Embossing Powder in Copper on random areas.


Step 9

Add Imagine’s Embossing powder in Clear to the rest of gear and heat set


Step 10

Ink the card’s edges with Turquoise Gem VersaMagic Ink. Dry paper. Ink small areas randomly with the Celestial Copper Delicata ink.


Step 11

Adhere corrugated cardboard front to the card.


Step 12

Adhere nailheads, studs, and gears. Stamp a “Happy Father’s Day” sentiment and cut out into a rectangle shape. Add small metal studs on the four corners of the sentiment card and mount to the front of the card. Essentially the card is finished at this point but you can continue to add little details to make it your own! Happy grungy cardmaking!

This month’s color at Imagine is Mango. Do you like mangoes? They are delicious. I like plain mangoes, mango juice, even mango in my summer salads. After creating today’s project, I can add to my list of mango appreciation VersaMagic Ink in Mango Madness. As I started using this beautiful color, I soon realized I could not stop at just coloring my tree; I also colored white paper flowers and a butterfly with this ink as well. You could say I had a Madness for this Mango Ink.

Time: 1.5 hours

Directions


Step 1

Spray the paper with water. Spray with Fireworks Shimmery Craft Spray in Summer Sky. Dry paper.


Step 2

Ink the paper with VersaMagic in Aegean Blue, Thatched Straw and Memento Luxe in Wedding Dress using the Sponge Dauber, Inkblusher, and Smudgee.


Step 3

Using a Sponge Dauber ink through the flowering tree stencil with the VersaMagic in Mango Madness. Emboss using Clear Embossing Powder. Place the stencil over the image again and ink through the stencil with the VersaMagic in Mango Madness. Emboss the image with the Sparkle Embossing Powder.


Step 4

Ink a scrap piece of watercolor paper on one side ink with VersaMagic in Thatched Straw and the other half ink the VersaMagic in Mango Madness. Emboss both colors using the Clear Embossing Powder. Punch out the butterfly with each ink color.


Step 5

Layer one butterfly over the other, adhere together with On Point Glue. Stamp the word “hello” on a piece of paper, cut a tag shape around the sentiment. Punch a hole in the center. Tie a piece of embroidery thread on the butterfly and tag.


Step 6

Ink VersaMagic in Thatched Straw on the Craft Mat, spray water and dip paper flowers in it, ensuring to completely color the flowers. Dry the flowers.


Step 7

Ink VersaMagic in Mango Madness on the flowers. Glue the flowers, butterfly, and tag onto the tree background using On Point Glue. For the yellow background paper, cut a piece of paper a little bigger than the main card, and ink the out edges with VersaMagic in Thatched Straw. Assemble the card by mounting the flowering tree stencil card panel to the yellow background card base.

I hope you are mad about this month’s color the way I was and give this project a try.

Sometimes when I sit down at the craft table I have a very definite idea in mind, other times it’s more of a general concept. Even when I have that definite idea in mind, though, it’s no guarantee that’s where I’m going to end up! Case in point: these backgrounds began in the direction of marble but ended up so very far afield. The fact that one has a definite camo look and the other a more delicate spring meadow is cool in and of itself, but when you consider I used the exact same shades of VersaMagic and techniques to get both, well, it’s easy to see how you can maximize your craft time by going with the flow!

Make a Purple "Good Vibes" Shimmery Greeting Card

Creating subtle interest on cards and other projects is easy with the amazing products from Imagine and Tsukineko. I have been experimenting and creating purple background ombre effects using VersaFine Clair and Memento Luxe ink pads as well as some older favorites like Creative Medium and All-Purpose Inks. Take a look at how to make this card.

Time: 30 minutes

Directions


Step 1

Use a jumbo dauber and blend a pattern through a stencil using Memento Luxe Sweet Plum.


Step 2

Continue the same pattern using a darker shade of ink like Memento Luxe Elderberry.


Step 3

The blending creates a perfect ombre effect going from light to dark. Did you know that Memento Luxe has superior blending qualities? It makes for the most amazing blended effects with its creamy effortless application.


Step 4

Add a slight shimmer to the blended effect by adding Creative Medium in Shimmer over the blended pattern.


Step 5

To create a shade of purple, mix a couple of drops of All-Purpose Ink in Orchid Odyssey into the Creative Medium.


Step 6

Paint the colored Creative Medium over the pattern and leave to dry. The end result is a subtle shade of purple removing the bright white background, but also adding a beautiful shimmer to the card.


Step 7

Use VersaFine Clair Monarch and stamp the “Good Vibes” sentiment onto white cardstock and cut it out.


Step 8

Stamp the sentiment again but directly onto the stenciled background and sprinkle with glitter embossing powder. Heat set the embossing powder to give a beautiful shimmering sentiment on the shimmering background.


Step 9

Layer the stamped sentiment slightly off-set from the embossed sentiment onto the card using foam tape for added dimension. The embossed sentiment below makes the stamped sentiment really stand out and creates loads of interest. Add irRESISTible Neon Purple splats to finish off your card.

Create Lovely Wedding Gift Out of Polymer Clay Ultraviolet color

The weather is getting nicer and the wedding season will be upon us soon. Of course, weddings happen all year round, but June is a popular month. June wedding tradition goes back to Roman times when they celebrated the festival of the deity Juno and his wife Jupiter, who was the goddess of marriage and childbirth, on the first day of June. The Victorians celebrated June weddings because the flowers were in full bloom, which was used as wedding decor. Speaking of decor, I had the idea to celebrate weddings this season with a DIY ring bowl. It is easy to make and it’s not time-consuming. The results are beautiful and heartfelt. The ring dish can used during the ceremony to transport the ring down the aisle, and the newlyweds will always have a keepsake from the wedding.

Step 1

Condition the FIMO clay on the pasta machine or use a roller. If using the pasta machine roll a sheet of clay to the thickest setting (about 5 mm).


Step 2

Lay down the sheet of clay, place the bowl upside down on top of the sheet. Using the bowl as a guide, cut the clay from around the bowl with clay pick or precision knife. Smooth out the bowl’s rim by running your fingers along the surface and smoothing out bumps and jagged areas. (I used a cutting mat as the  Imagine Craft Mat as it is not a cutting mat.)


Step 3

Press stamps into clay to add texture or a sentiment.


Step 4

Place the clay in the bowl and bake together, according to the manufacturer’s instructions on the clay package. The clay will take on the shape of the bowl.


Step 5

Rub the Purple Hydrangea VersaMagic DewDrop ink on the bowl in random areas. Use the pointy end of ink pads to get into the crevices.


Step 6

Spray a little water on the ink—it will turn liquidy right away. Swish ink around the bowl, ensuring that it gets into the stamped areas.


Step 7

Dump out liquid ink and dry excess liquid in the bowl with a dry paper towel.


Step 8

Continue to color the bowl by rubbing more ink with your fingers or Sponge Dauber. Do not add more water. Leave areas uncolored, so that you can add another color. Heat Set. In the uncolored areas rub, with your fingers or a Sponge Dauber, Wedding Dress Memento Luxe. I did not blend the colors much, but you can. Slightly rub on Delicata White Shimmer all over the bowl, avoiding the crevices. It helps to bring everything together and gives a nice light shimmer.

 
Step 9

Add dimension with Grape Jelly and Lulu Lavender IrRESISTible. Using the fine-tipped applicator to fill in recessed areas. Here I have filled in the birds, birdcage, and text with the Grape Jelly color. Add Lulu Lavender in the rest of the recessed area to vary the colors. Allow everything to dry completely. Seal the clay with clay sealer or indoor polyurethane.
