Project Swap: Let Your Dreams Fly Greeting Card

Welcome back for another Artist Project Swap with Martha and Steph. For the Month of May, we challenged our artists to exchange tutorials and create each other’s designs in order to see how each of our artists interprets style and choices. The receiving artist did not know who designed the project, nor did they receive any images! In today’s post, Martha writes the directions and recommended supplies list and Steph created the project.

Let Your Dreams Fly by Steph Ackerman

This month we were given another team member’s project to re-create. What a great way to see how someone else approaches cardmaking! I love creating backgrounds using stamps and inks, but don’t generally have a lot of “white space” on my cards. I’ve always felt the need to cover white spaces. This project challenge taught me that you can use white spaces to create amazing projects. See how I did it!

Skill: Beginner
Time: 30 minutes

Directions

Step 1

Ink background stamps with VersaMagic in Cloud White on white paper and let dry.

Step 2

Using daubers, ink panel with Memento in Morocco, Rhubarb Stalk and Peanut Brittle which should create a warm hue.

Step 3

Cut the panel to fit the card. Save the scraps. Die cut a circle from the center of the panel and set it aside to use for a second card design later.

Step 4

Ink a paisley stamp with VersaMagic in Cloud White. Stamp it several times in the circle. Re-ink paisley stamp with Memento ink in Rhubarb Stalk and Morocco. Stamp each color several times around the circle, stamping off the circle. Stamp phrase in center of the circle with VersaMark and emboss with White Embossing Powder.

Step 5

Add the circle to a card placing it slightly off the card. Cut off the excess. Using the scraps, cut two different sized strips. Ink the edges of the scrap pieces with Memento Rhubarb Ink and add to the card. Add drops of IrRESISTible in Wedding Dress around the card.

Step 6

Using the punched panel create a second card. Ink the die cut panel with Memento in Rhubarb. Add the panel to a white card base. Stamp the Mary Elizabeth Frye paragraph from Whimsy Stamps with Memento in Rhubarb on a smaller die cut circle. Mat with medium sized kraft die cut. Add to center of the card. The two additional dies can be size from the Spellbinders stackable sets. Stamp “With Sympathy” in Rhubarb Ink on a leftover scrap and mount with foam adhesives, slightly overlapping the circles.

These two card designs come together quickly if you plan to coordinate the original circle punch.

Did You Miss The Date? Make a Belated Birthday Card

by Martha Lucia Gomez

Did You Miss The Date? Make a Belated Birthday Card

Have you ever missed someone’s birthday by mistake? Today’s project has a theme that will help with this little problem just in case you get in a jam with a missed date. This project also uses fun techniques with a button quilted looking background on kraft cardstock. Take a look to see how to made this card!

Skill: Intermediate
Time: 1 hour

Directions

Step 1

Cut a piece of crumb cake (kraft) cardstock of 4.25″ x 5.5″. Take the large “Tufted Button” background stamp from Joy Clair and stamp it using VersaMagic in Cloud White. If you do not have this stamp then select one with a lot of free space inside or any good image for coloring and cover the stamped image with white embossing powder. Melt the powder with the heat tool.

Step 2

Dab VersaMagic Cloud White Ink on your craft mat and spray it with water. “Paint” your stamped image with the mix created using a paintbrush or aqua painter. Let the paper dry well.

Step 3

Dab VersaFine Ink Clair in Warm Breeze on the mat and paint one side of the borders of the stamped background following the pattern. This will create a shadow effect on the background.

Step 4

Dab Memento Ink in Tangelo on the mat. Repeat the painting process with Tangelo over the whole background using an aqua painter or paint brush. Let the paper dry. Layering the different colors is a beautiful effect on this kraft cardstock. Resize the stamped layer and paste it over a white card base using double sided foam tape or dimensionals.

Step 5

Die cut a leaf or floral element and heat emboss with Sparkle Embossing Powder. Add the “belated birthday wishes” sentiment stamped with VersaFine Clair in Warm Breeze over a piece of white cardstock. Paste the stamped image with a mat created with vellum with the die cut fitting in between.

This design is super fun to make and can be reworked or imagined with any number of themes, background stamps or sentiments. Enjoy and have a nice day!

Helpful Tips and Tricks: How to Take Amazing Photos of Craft Projects

by Martha Lucia Gomez

Helpful Tips and Tricks: How to Take Amazing Photos of Craft Projects

With the ever-growing popularity of social media platforms, particularly Instagram, crafters have been talking about how to take better photos of our projects. Since not all of us are professional photographers, and we don’t all have “the perfect tools”, I would like to talk about how to take great photos of your work without having to be a pro-photographer.

Style your photos creatively

These are important elements to focus on when taking a photo of a project:

  • the backdrop or background
  • main focus – which is always your project
  • props or supporting elements to make the focus shine
  • the camera

Backgrounds

With clear and simple photos you need to have a neutral base or background, like white, grey, ecru, cream or even brown tones like wood. Since most of us don’t have professional lighting, set your background up where it is in natural light, and make sure it is a large enough base to place your card or project. Try using dark colors in the background to help the project colors pop.

You can set up your background so that your project can be laid flat or standing up. I find that I can capture more details by taking photos of my cards flat on a surface with the camera located directly above it. Also, if you have a small space to take your photos, this option is perfect because it requires less space and can make it easier to incorporate other elements.

With flat photos, remember your backdrop is the most important part. If you are creative you don’t need to buy expensive elements, you can use everyday household items and surfaces as the background. The most important thing is to keep in mind the colors and textures. A brightly colored element next to your project can round out the scene and support the focal point, but being able to use it as the background will be trickier, tho can work on occasion.

You can use wood surfaces, floor boards, ceramic tiles or designer textured papers, as well as other supplies to add some depth to the photos. You can also use elements like designed plates, which can be easily found in home decor stores. My favorite is HomeGoods because I can buy just one plate, placemat or napkin. Neutral colored fat quarters found at the fabric store is another cheap option.

Supplies or Photo Props

With staging photos, it is nice to add a few elements alongside your card or project—but these cannot compete with the main focus object i.e. your crafting project. You can use many items as photo props. I use a lot of flowers and greenery, my favorites are made of silicone because the fabric flowers don’t look real to me. But definitely, my favorites photo props are the craft supplies. Supplies like inks, stamps, stencils, color pencils or markers, and die cuts are perfect elements to support your project. Extra embellishments like buttons, sequins, washi tape and twines are also great, but always be careful with the color combinations. My suggestion is to start with the neutral items first that won’t compete with your project. If you still aren’t finding what you like, just look around your home and you might find gorgeous elements that you can borrow for a few minutes as part of your photo.

Camera

With today’s technology, you really don’t need to have a professional camera. Cell phones like the iPhone or Samsung make it possible to take amazing photos. To make them work best, use natural light source and keep an eye out for any shadows across your photo. Also, think about a good angle to take the photo. Always start by making your lens parallel to the project front, and then play with the angle from there. My last helpful hint is very simple but important: always clean the lens of your camera or phone before taking the photos. Because we touch our phones so often it is easy for the lens to become dirty.

I hope you found these tips useful. Just remember to stay open to learning new ideas and most importantly have fun! Thank you for stopping by the Imagine blog and don’t forget to share!

Make a Happy Birthday Card with Layered Stamping

by Martha Lucia Gomez

Make a Happy Birthday Card with Layered Stamping in VersaMagic DewDrop

One of the advantages of using chalk inks like VersaMagic is the soft texture created for your cardmaking projects. Creating texture and mixing colors is easy when you use the DewDrops because of the control and use of the tip of the inkpad. On this project, I used a single flower image to create a beautiful pattern and a stamping tool to create this eye-catching birthday card.

Directions

Step 1

Using a stamping tool, stamp the first flower with VersaMagic Mango Madness as a base color.

Step 2

Since Mango Madness is a relatively light color, I had to stamp the image over the Very Vanilla cardstock twice to make all the flowers and leaves details evident.

Step 3

Keeping the stamp and the paper in the same place, apply and combine the colors of the VersaMagic directly over the stamp. Make sure not to contaminate the ink pad with different colors. But if this happens to you, don’t worry, you can clean your ink pad with a paper towel.

Step 4

Repeat the stamping process until creating the background that you want. Keep the pattern of colors or change it to others with each image. On this card, I used VersaMagic Mango Madness, Red Magic, and Ocean Depth. To complement the background you can splatter some tiny spots of Fireworks Shimmery Craft Spray in Tuxedo Black. I also used a few splatters of All-Purpose Ink in Champagne Mist to give to my background a shimmery touch. Stamp your sentiment using VersaMark, sprinkle with Imagine’s Embossing Powder in White and melt the powder with the heat tool.

Step 5

To finalize the card, resize the stamped background, sponge the borders with VersaMagic Wheat and tie a few loops of natural hemp twine around. Paste directly over the Crushed Curry card base using Tear It Tape and paste your sentiment with dimensionals or double-sided foam tape. If you consider necessary, you can repeat the splatter process to enhance some parts of the card.
