Be a Star with New Embossing Techniques

2022-June-Martha-Lucia-600x600_1

By Martha Lucia Gomez –

Hello there! In today’s crafting tutorial, I will be sharing two easy ways to upgrade the basic embossing techniques using a Brilliant Ink and embossing power or MBoss.  This is a great idea for any occasion, however like summer is around the corner, I created a Patriotic Card honoring 4th of July.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time to Complete: 1 hour

Directions:

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 1
Step 1:

Select a piece of card stock and embossing folder. Use a piece of cardstock larger than the folder. Dry emboss it in the normal way using your die cut machine.

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 2

Step 2:

Pick a brayer or any type of roller to add ink to the emboss design. Noticed that you can use any face of the embossed piece to develop this technique. I am using Brilliance Pearlescent Sly Blue and Shimmer White Cardstock.

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 3

Step 3:

Ink your brayer completely and apply the Brilliance Ink over the surface with a soft movement. You don’t want to transfer the ink to the debossed part.

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 4

Step 4:

Repeat the step 3, until you are satisfied with the color of the layer. In my sample, I made this step three times to have a great covering.

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 5

Step 5:

Create the card base and layers that you wanted to use. In this model I am using white card base, and blue die cut layer to create a contrast. Resize your inked embossed piece to use it as top layer over the die cut piece. Select a shadow die set with a sentiment or any other type of image to create a window over your inked layer. Don’t paste your layers yet.

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 6

Step 6:

With the shadow or die base of your die cut, create a window over the inked layer. If you want you can save the die cut layer to use in another project.

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 7

Step 7:

Paste the inked embossed layer over the die cut layer using your favorite adhesive. If you want to have more dimension, you can use foam tape. Paste the decorative piece over the card base.

Cut the word or image according with the die cut that you selected.

2022-June-Martha Lucia - Patriotic Card - Step 8

Step 8:

With masking tape, cover the half of the die cut word and made a partial hot embossing using VersaMark Ink and your favorite color of embossing powder or MBoss. In my model, I am using the Metallic Berry.

Don’t remove the masking tape if you want to repeat the above step and obtain shinier and dimension with the hot embossing. I repeated this step twice.

2022-June-Martha-Lucia-600x600

Step 9:

Paste the embossed word and decorate with a complement sentiment and/or embellishments. I used a tiny sentiment stamped with Memento Paris Dusk and a few die cut stars in white cardstock.

Colorful Peonies Created with Ink and Stencils Birthday Card

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Beauty_Step12_700

By Neva Cole

See how to use a variety of inks to create a stunning card using layering stencils and Fireworks! as an embellishment.  Layering stamps have been around for a few years, but recently a few companies have come out with layering stencils that match stamp sets.  It takes a bit more time, but the results are phenomenal and I find that the placement is just a tiny bit easier.  For a finishing touch, The Essential Glue Pad produces the look of foil without the need for heated plates or a laminating machine, a win in my book!

Skill: Intermediate

Time: 1 Hour

Directions:

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step1
Step 1

Stamp Pink Fresh Painted Peony Mix in Delicata Golden Glitz and heat emboss with Iridescent Embossing Powder.  I placed the stamp at a 45 degree angle on my stamp platform, as the stamped image is longer than most platforms.  This technique creates enough images for at least three cards!

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step2
Step 2:

Most Peonies are white or light pink.  I choose Memento Angel Pink and used a heavy hand with the ink dauber to ink the first stencil.  Using an ink dauber allows for a bit of shading in the process as well.  Each stencil has registration marks to allow precise placement.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step3
Step 3:

The next stencil in the series colors the complementary flowers in the design.  Memento Dandelion Yellow is inked with an ink dauber, again with a heavy hand.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step4
Step 4:

The next layer creates the leafy background.  It is inked with Memento New Sprout.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step5
Step 5:

To shade in the fourth layer of color I used VersaColor Orchid.  As you can see the images are coming together.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step6
Step 6:

Each successive layer adds more dimension, so pretty!  Memento Rose Bud is added in this layer.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step7
Step 7:

Small pieces of removable tape are placed on the flowers that I preferred to accent with something other than the Memento Cottage Ivy used on the leaves.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step8
Step 8

To finish the flowers, Memento Sweet Plum was inked through the previously covered sections of the stencil.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step9
Step 9

Die cut with the matching die.  All nine pieces cut at the same time!

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step10Step 10

Trim a section of white linen textured cardstock to 4” x 5.25”.  Shake each Fireworks! and Shimmer spray until the fine shimmer particles are dispersed in the bottle.  Remove sprayer nozzle and tap gently to add color sprays around the white cardstock.  This method produces larger droplets that are not as closely placed together as compared to using the direct spray technique.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Step11
Step 11

Stamp the sentiment on a piece of black cardstock with The Essential Glue Pad and gently place Metallic Flakes over the glue.  Use a brush to remove larger pieces of Metallic Flakes and return to the jar.  A paper towel will clean up the rest of the image.  Trim to desired shape, in this case a fishtail banner.

2022-April-Neva-PeonyBirthday_Beauty_Step12_700
Step 12

Trim black cardstock to 5 3/8” x 4 1/8”.  Adhere layers together on a A-2 size card base with Tear It! tape.  The flower bouquet is adhere with dimensional foam adhesive.

Pastel Easter Card Made Easy with Kaleidacolor

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-Step9-Beauty_700x700

By Neva Cole

See how to use the Kaleidacolor ink pad to create a pastel Easter Card with subtle style that can be completed in a short amount of time.  Layering with contrasting cardstock and texture added with embossing folders gives this card great dimension.

Skill:  Beginner

Time:  30 Minutes.

Directions:

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step1
Step 1

Trim white cardstock to 8.5″ x 5.5″ to make card base.  Fold in half and use a rubber brayer to ink the front of the card with Kaleidacolor in Baby Powder.  Move the brayer to fully cover the card and re-ink brayer as needed to create a well inked surface.  Pay attention to direction of ink pad and brayer to avoid mixing the ink colors beyond the ombre look.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step2

Step 2

Trace the outside of a cross die on craft cardstock to create a matching layering piece.  Fussy cut the layer three time or use a electronic die cut machine to cut three layers.  Glue the layers together with OnPoint Glue.  Using a wet glue allows a little time to wiggle the layers into perfect position.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step3

Step 3

Place die on white cardstock and die cut and pressure emboss with rubber mat.  Use a make-up sponge rolled to pick up ink in the same ombre of the Kaleidacolor ink pad and ink through the die onto the raised embossed areas.  Die cut two more layers and glue the colored die cut to the top of the first two white layers.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step4

Step 4

Ink the raised portion of the embossing folder with Kaleidacolor Baby Powder in the same color direction as the card base.  Pressure emboss a 3.75″ x 5″ section of white cardstock.  The ink will transfer to the indentations of the design.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step5

Step 5

Trim a section of Kraft cardstock to 4″ x 5.25″.  Layer the assembled parts of the card without adhering them together to determine the placement of the sentiment.  I choose the appropriate size circle die to die cut the corner of the pressure embossed white cardstock.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step6

Step 6

Using the next size smaller circle die and pressure embossed white cardstock to determine placement of the smaller circle die on the Kraft cardstock and die cut.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step7

Step 7

Determine placement of sentiment and remove the layers.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-step8

Step 8

Stamp the sentiment in Delicata Sapphire Blue.

2022-March-Neva-EasterCard-Step9-Beauty_700x700

Step 9

Adhere the layers of the card together.  The Kraft cardstock layer is adhered with dimensional foam adhesive.  All the other layers used Tear It! Tape for best adhesion.

Triple-Step Stamped Card Made Simple with Memento Ink

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYouCard_IG_2

By Neva Cole

See how to use the Memento ink line to created a cohesive matching layered card in just a few steps.  The beauty of this particular method is you may make a number of cards depending on your needs in more than one color scheme as shown in the bonus step.  Finishing touches use irRESISTible Pico Embellisher, VersaMark Clear ink, and Embossing Powder.

Skill:  Beginner

Time:  30 Minutes plus drying time.

Directions:

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYou_Step_1
Step 1

Trim white cardstock to 4.25″ x 5.5″, this will allow a quicker placement in step 2 on the stamp platform.  Center Image “A” from the Concord & 9th Triple-Step Floral Frame Stamp on the white cardstock and then adhere to the stamp platform.  Ink Image “A” with Memento Bamboo Leaves.  Double or triple stamp the image to create even darker images.  (If doing multiple cards, continue stamping Image “A” until you have your desired quantity.)

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYouCard_Step_2

Step 2

Place Image “B” from the Concord & 9th Triple-Step Floral Frame Stamp on the white cardstock so the small tulip shaped flowers line up with the stems.  Look directly down through the stamp to judge the placement of the stamp.  In this version Memento Cantaloupe is stamped first.  Turn the image 180 degrees and double check image placement, then stamp in Memento Tangelo.  (If doing multiple cards, continue stamping Image “B” until you have your desired quantity.)

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYou_Step_3

Step 3

The stamp set has two stamps that will add the center of the roses and an additional layer to the small tulip shaped flowers.  Use the same method as Step 2 for placement.  If the center of the rose is slightly off, stamp again until the white area is inked.

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYou_Step_4

Step 4–Bonus

Shown are the additional card fronts stamped during my session of triple-stamping.  Once the layering stamps were in place I like to make multiple stampings for future use.

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYouCard_Step_5-B

Step 5

Stamp “So Kind of You” in Memento Tangelo using a stamp platform.  Stamp over the image with VersaMark Clear ink and heat emboss with clear embossing powder.  Use an ink blusher with a light hand to color around the image, the embossed sentiment will resist the ink.  This sentiment has a matching die to allow you to die cut before adhering to your card front.

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYouCard_Step_6

Step 6

Trim white cardstock to 5.5″ x 8.5″ and fold in half to create an A2 card base.  Ink the edges using an ink dauber with Memento Cantaloupe.  The card front die also creates a very narrow border, this one is inked with Memento Dandelion using an ink dauber.

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYouCard_Step_7

Step 7

Place the card front face down and align the Dandelion border to the card front.  Carefully place Tear It! tape around all four edges of the card front.  Take time to “catch” the border without having the Tear It! tape show on the front.

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYouCard_Step_8

Step 8

Adhere card front to card base and add the die cut sentiment with dimensional foam adhesive.

Feb_22_Neva_SoKindofYouCard_Step_9

Step 9

Learn from my mistake!  Add the irRESISTible Pico Embellisher in Dandelion AFTER the card is assembled to the center of the flowers besides the roses.  The irRESISTible Pico Embellisher will retain the rounded shape after drying.  When I die cut the card front after adding the irRESISTible Pico Embellisher the dots were flattened.  However it was an easy rescue as another layer of the irRESISTible Pico Embellisher added the rounded dimension back to the flower centers!
