Making Your Own Ephemera

Ephemera Tag 1

By Alison Heikkila –

Hello! Today I’ve got a fun tutorial that’s all about making your own ephemera. Ephemera can be ticket stubs, advertisements, postage stamps, handwritten letters, etc. It’s fun to use “found” ephemera, but it’s also a blast to make your own. You can feel free to follow each of the “steps” below, or just choose the ones you like. There’s no real order or correct way to make these elements, and you can use them on any of your paper-crafting projects. I just decided to go with a tag today. This particular project is great if you need to loosen up, break out of a creative block, or you just feel like adding to your stash. Just have fun with it!

Ephemera Tag 2

Step 1:

Grab some cardstock and a stencil, and start spraying them with Fireworks! Spray.

Ephemera Tag 3

Step 2:

There’s a lot of spray left on that stencil, so don’t waste it! Grab another scrap of paper and flip the stencil (wet side down) on to it to get the reverse design. You can use a brayer or your hands to push the stencil into the paper to transfer the color better.

Ephemera Tag 4

Step 3:

Still more on the stencil? Spray it with a little water to get the color moving and press it into a third piece of paper.

Ephemera Tag 5

Step 4:

Grab some rubber stamps that have fun designs (especially solid images like this one), spray your craft mat with another color of Fireworks! Spray, and ink up the stamp in the puddle. Stamp some scrap paper with the wet stamp.

Ephemera Tag 6

Step 5:

Apply Kaleidacolor inks to cardstock using your favorite method. I used the Fruitcake palette on my Gel Press with a brayer. Then, take a stencil and apply VersaFine Clair ink on top using a sponge dauber or cosmetic sponge.

Ephemera Tag 7

Step 6:

Run a piece of cardstock through an embossing folder. Then ink the raised areas with Delicata Ink for shine.

Ephemera Tag 8

Step 7:

Stamp out a sentiment with VersaMark Ink and use your favorite Mboss embossing powder on it. For texture, tear the edges and ink them with Rich Cocoa Memento Ink.

Step 8:

Take some old book paper and flick Fireworks! Spray on it to get different sized droplets.

Step 9:

Stamp some small geometric shapes and die cut/fussy cut them.

Look at all the ephemera we’ve created by just using scraps!

Ephemera Tag 9

Step 10:

Die cut a large tag out of cardstock. Start laying your ephemera on to the tag to see where you want your pieces to be.

Ephemera Tag 10

Step 11:

Let pieces hang off the edges of your piece. You can cut them off later, if you wish. Don’t be afraid to move your elements around, cut them, tear them, etc.

Ephemera Tag 11

Step 12:

Use different types of adhesive. I like using Tear It! Tape for the embossed layers, wet glue for flat layers, and foam tape or squares for elements that I want raised. I also love to use On Point Glue for sequins and rhinestones, which I added after I had all of my paper elements adhered.

Ephemera Tag 12 600

Here’s the finished tag. Again, make this however you like. It doesn’t need to be for the holidays, it doesn’t need to be a tag. Just grab a bunch of supplies and play. Whatever ephemera you have leftover can be used at another time.

Make a Beautiful Pumpkin Thank You Card

Thankful 12

By Alison Heikkila –

Greetings! Alison here and today my latest tutorial for Imagine is a textured, fall-themed thank you card. I can see making a bunch of these to put as place setting on your Thanksgiving table, as a thank you to your guests for celebrating the holidays with you. I used several simple techniques on this card that when combined, look really fancy and festive.

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Time: 45 minutes- 1 Hour

Thankful 2

Directions:

Thankful 3
Step 1:

Using a piece of metallic cardstock, run it through your die cutting machine with an embossing folder.

Thankful 4
Step 2:

Using a sanding block, a piece of sandpaper, or even a nail file, sand the raised areas of the embossed cardstock. This will give it an aged or distressed look.

Step 3:

Gently rub Spiced Chai StazOn ink across the surface to add more interest to the piece of cardstock.

Thankful 5

Step 4:

On a Gel Press Plate, gently tap the Cappuccino Delight Kaleidacolor Inks across the surface. You can use a brayer to blend the colors, as well as a few spritzes of water or Ink Potion No. 9.

Thankful 6

Step 5:

Lay white cardstock on to the Gel Press Plate and rub to get the ink to transfer. Pull the print and let it dry. I pulled a couple of prints and then chose my favorite to use for this card.

Thankful 7

Step 6:

Die cut a pumpkin out of the monoprint.

Thankful 8

Step 7:

Die cut a bigger pumpkin out of brown cardstock and ink the edges with Golden Glitz Delicata Ink.

Thankful 9

Step 8:

Die cut the sentiment out of cream colored cardstock and ink the edges with Desert Sand Memento Ink.

Thankful 10

Step 9:

Add Tear It Tape to the back of the embossed panel. I like to use this adhesive when I am working with a piece that has a lot of texture. It holds everything in place really well, and you don’t need to worry about liquid adhesive getting “stuck” in the wells.

Step 10:

Assemble the rest of the card. I used On Point Glue to attach the rhinestones.

Thankful 11 600

Isn’t it pretty?

I love all of the shine from the embossed panel. I also really like seeing all the colors on the pumpkin through the die cut. I hope you’ll give some of these techniques a try!

Learn How to Make a Vividly Fall Colored Thank You Card Using Kaleidacolor

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouBeauty_600

By Neva Cole –

There are many Kaleidacolor pads that are in the autumn themed pallet.  Even though this card is multi-layered it comes together in a short amount of time considering all of the inked embellishments!

Skill: Intermediate

Time: 2 Hours

Directions:

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep1
Step 1:

Trim cream cardstock to 5” x 5” and center the overlay and stamp on the center rotation point of the Turn About Stamp.  Place on stamp platform to pick up stamp, and remove overlay.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep2
Step 2:

Ink up the stamp with Kaleidacolor in Autumn Leaves with the green end of the pad and stamp the image.  Rotate the paper 90 degree to the right.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep3
Step 3:

Ink up the stamp with Kaleidacolor in Desert Heat with the orange end of the pad and stamp the image.  Rotate the paper 90 degree to the right.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep4
Step 4:

Ink up the stamp with Kaleidacolor in Cappuccino Delight with the brown end of the pad and stamp the image.  Rotate the paper 90 degree to the right.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep5
Step 5:

Ink up the stamp with Kaleidacolor in Desert Heat with the red end of the pad and stamp the image.  Rotate the paper 90 degree to the right.  After I started the card I realized it can also be completed with two complementary Kaleidacolor pads, just by using opposite ends to ink the image.  Die cut the completed wreath with a circle die cut.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep6
Step 6:

Ink the sentiment from the red end of the Kaleidacolor Desert Heat pad and stamp.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep7
Step 7:

Die cut the sentiment.  The edges are then blended in with an Ink Dauber and the yellow end of the Kaleidacolor Desert Heat pad.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep8
Step 8:

More embellishment is added with included stamps from the set from various sections of all three Kaleidacolor pads.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep9
Step 9:

Spritz a section of cream cardstock with Ink Potion No. 9.  This will allow the ink to spread more uniformly on the cardstock.  Generally glossy cardstock works best, but the rest of the card was regular cream cardstock, this is a good work around.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep10
Step 10:

Using a 2” rubber brayer add ink liberally to the white cardstock until fairly well blended.  All three Kaleidacolor ink pads are used on one piece of cardstock with the intention to have several colors to die cut the coordinating leave dies.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep11
Step 11:

Decorate the front of the 5” x 7” card front in the same way the sentiment die is inked and stamped in Step 8.

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouStep12
Step 12:

Arrange die cuts from the brayered section of cardstock on the card base.  Use repositionable adhesive to pick up the edges of the die cuts and flip over the entire front circle wreath.  Add dimensional foam adhesive to secure die cuts in place.  (You will notice that the reverse side was the first try, however it wasn’t the best, so it is simply flipped over and the other side was used.  You only see the mistake in the demonstration step!)

2022_Sept_Neva_KaliedacolorLeavesThankYouBeauty_13
Step 13:

Adhere stamped wreath to card front.  Adhere the sentiment to the center of the stamped wreath with dimensional foam adhesive.

How To Create The Perfect Plaid Background Using Kaleidacolor Inks

2022-May-Katy-Ingram-Fathersday-Plaid_650x6502022-May-Katy-Ingram-Fatherday-Plaid-650x650

By Katy Ingram –

Hello Friends! Katy here and I am excited to share my project with you today. I am using the Kaleidacolor Ink Pad in Caribbean Sea to create my two plaid panels. Have you ever wondered or struggled with what colors to use to create a plaid background? Well my friends wonder and struggle no more because the Kaleidacolor Ink Pads solve it all. These ink pads coordinate so well that it takes the guesswork out. In the video I show just how easy it is, with a stencil of course, but the best part is, you don’t have to use all the colors or all the layers of the stencil I am using to get some really cool backgrounds. I will definitely be bringing the pads out more often to take the guesswork out of what colors go well with each other. Thanks so much for stopping by.

I will catch you next time!

Create a Beautiful Wedding Scrapbook Page

With-This-Ring-1

By Alison Heikkila –

Hello! It’s time for my latest tutorial for Imagine, and I decided to make another scrapbook page. This time, I went way back and pulled out some wedding photos. I never did finish our wedding album, so this was a great opportunity to get one more page completed.

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Time to Complete: 1-2 Hours (I’m a slow scrapbooker)

Directions:

With This Ring 2

Step 1:

Gather your supplies. This may seem obvious, but it helps quite a bit to grab a bunch of things that you may wind up using on your page. Inks, ephemera, dies, stencils, etc. are all things that you could use. I grabbed a bunch of items for the photo above, but I didn’t use all of them, and some things i used aren’t shown here. I don’t often have a plan when I am scrapbooking, but I like to grab things to help get me started.

With This Ring 3

Step 2:

Based on the colors in the photo, I wanted to use the Vineyard Kaleidacolor Ink Pad. I took a piece of Mixed Media Paper and rolled the ink on to it using my brayer and Ink Potion No. 9. The Ink Potion No. 9 helps the color to move and transfer better. It took a number of passes to get the paper covered, but I love how it looks painted and uneven. This piece will go behind the photos to “ground” them. Let dry.

With This Ring 4
Step 3:

Paint or enhance your ephemera. I found some feathers that have foil on them in my stash, and the negative space was white. So I applied some of the Kaleidacolor Ink to my Craft Mat and painted it on with a brush and water. The look is subtle, but it helped it to coordinate with the rest of my page better. I also added some color to the stopwatch.

With This Ring 5
Step 4:

Add die cuts. I die cut a few lavender stems from white cardstock. I used Elderberry Memento ink and the greens from the Vineyard Ink to paint them. These pieces are delicate, so don’t oversaturate them. I also die cut some foliage from white cardstock and lightly spritzed them with Desert Sand Fireworks! Spray. Using white die cuts allows you to completely customize them.

Step 5:

Add die cuts with colored cardstock. I die cut the wreath out of green cardstock. It needed to be enhanced a bit, so I lightly applied Pistachio and Olive Grove. It’s subtle, but adds a lot of interest.

With This Ring 6

Step 6:

Enhance textured die cuts. I used an Impresslits border under both of my photos. I cut it out of white cardstock, and used Pretty Petunia VersaMagic Ink to enhance the design. I just rubbed the ink pad across the piece. I also sprayed it unevenly with Desert Sand fireworks! Spray for shine and to dull down the white a bit.

With This Ring 7

Step 7:

Begin to place your elements. Play with torn edges, overlapping items, and creating a sense of movement. Move things around to make sure you have good, even placement, and feel free to add or remove pieces as necessary.

With This Ring 8
Step 8:

Add some splatter. I used some more Elderberry ink that I squished on to my Craft Mat to apply splatter to the entire white background. It’s just a bit more color, but it adds a lot to the finished page.

Step 9:

Add your title. I found some ridiculously old rub-ons and letters to help me create the perfect title.

With This Ring 9

Step 10:

Start gluing down your elements. It helps to take a photo of your layout before you start gluing, so that you can place your pieces back exactly where you had them. On Point Glue is perfect for the teeny die cuts I used.

With This Ring 10
Step 11

Finishing touches. Do you need an additional sprig of foliage? Do you need a touch more ink somewhere? This is the point where the page is just about finished, and you just need to add a tiny detail here and there.

With-This-Ring-1

Finished!

We’ve got a very pretty wedding page that works beautifully with the photos and feel of our wedding. Don’t forget…even if your embellishments and/or color scheme are completely different from mine, you can still use these techniques when creating your own layout. Playing with your inks to help enhance items you have in your stash can really tie everything together. Play with your papers and dies to see how you can alter them with inks and sprays to get exactly the look you want. Thanks so much for stopping by. Have an inspiring day!

Soft Inking Scrapbook Page with VersaMagic

Peace-700

By Alison Heikkila –

Hello! I love scrapbooking, but truthfully it’s been ages since I’ve made any layouts. I came across this fantastic picture of my husband when we were in Woodstock, NY a couple of years ago, and the inspiration hit. Let me show you how beautifully VersaMagic Ink blends with stencils and die cuts to make a fun page.

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Time: 45 minutes- 1 hour

Directions:

Peace 1

Step 1:

On white 12×12 cardstock, tape down the first layering stencil. I masked off some areas with washi tape, because I didn’t want the foliage to come to a harsh end where the stencil is cut. I only used leaves that were complete or went off the edge of my page.

Step 2:

Ink the leaves with a blending brush and Aquatic Splash VersaMagic Ink.

Step 3:

Add the top layering stencil and mask off any leaves that you don’t need.

Step 4:

Ink Teal Zeal Memento Ink with a blending brush.

Peace 2

Step 5:

Repeat the steps above to create a wide column of the foliage going down the left side of the page. Hint: I used that circle die to give the one leaf a rounded edge, instead of looking like it’s cut off by the edge of the stencil

Peace 3

Step 6:

Die cut the flamingo out of white cardstock. Ink blend the body with Pink Grapefruit and a touch of Pixie Dust VersaMagic Inks. Keep the inking soft….don’t overdo the color.

Peace 4

Step 7:

Die cut the legs out of white cardstock. Ink blend with Pink Grapefruit and Pumpkin Spice VersaMagic Inks. The Pumpkin Spice dulls the Pink Grapefruit just enough to make the legs look like the color of actual flamingo legs.

Step 8:

Die cut the front area of the beak with black cardstock.

Step 9:

Glue the flamingo pieces together with On Point Glue.

Peace 5

Step 10:

On your craft mat, swipe the Bouquet Kaleidacolor ink. You’ll be using the peachy tone in the middle.

Step 11

Wet a brush with water and pick up the peach color from your craft mat. Splatter the color all over the background of your scrapbook page.

Peace 6

Step 12:

Swipe Aquatic Splash on a piece of white cardstock. Die cut your title from that piece.

Peace 7
Step 13:

Using a small blending brush, apply Teal Zeal to the centers of the letters. Again, don’t go too heavy with the color.

Step 14:

Cut out a piece of coordinating patterned paper for a mat around your photo.

Peace 8 600

Step 15:

Adhere all layers with On Point Glue.

Peace 9

A close-up of the inking.

Art Supplies:
