Floral Mixed Media Card

By Helen Gullett

Hello crafty friends! Today we are going to make this floral mixed media card with some ink-smooshing, ink-swiping, ink-splattering, and embossing techniques.

Let’s get crafting!

Skill: Intermediate
Time: 15-30 minutes

Direction:

Step 1

Starting with creating the watercolored background panel by cutting a piece of 140 lb watercolor cardstock into 4 ¼ inch x 5 ½ inch. To pick out the color combo, make sure you pick the colors that won’t turn into a muddy color when they are mixed together.

Scribble some of the Tropical Lagoon Fabrico Marker on the craft mat and then spray it lightly with some water. Then, smoosh the watercolor cardstock to the watercolor ink on the mat. Pick it up and dry the watercolor ink on the panel with a craft heat gun. Repeat it until you like the result.

Clean the craft mat with the Staz-On All Purpose Stamp Cleaner and paper towel.

Step 2

Scribble some of the Peony Purple Fabrico Marker on the craft mat and then spray it lightly with some water.

Step 3

Scribble some of the Tangerine Fabrico Marker on the craft mat and then spray it lightly with some water.

Step 4

Scribble some of the Lemon Yellow Fabrico Marker on the craft mat and then spray it lightly with some water.

Step 5

Once the watercolored panel dried well, put it inside the embossing folder, and then run it through the machine.

Step 6

Swipe the VersaFine Clair Warm Breeze ink directly on the embossed part of the panel.

Make sure you swipe the ink lightly and smoothly, do not press down the ink pad to the paper. The juicer (good amount of ink) ink pad, the better.

Dry the ink on the panel with a craft heat gun.

Step 7

To tone down the bright color, swipe some of the VersMagic Cloud White ink on the panel.

This is an optional step, if you prefer a more subtle color background instead of bright color.

Dry the ink on the panel with a craft heat gun.

Step 8

Shake the Fireworks! Shimmery Craft Sprays bottles before you use it to make sure the ink inside mixes well.

Open the top of the spray and use it (or small round brush) to add some splatters of the Summer Sky Fireworks! Shimmery Craft Spray on the panel.

Dry the splatters of ink on the panel with a craft heat gun.

Step 9

Next, open the top of the spray and use it (or small round brush) to add some splatters of the Lulu Lavender Fireworks! Shimmery Craft Spray on the panel.

Dry the splatters of ink on the panel with a craft heat gun.

Step 10

Stamp the flower and leaf images on a white cardstock using the VersaFine Clair Nocturne ink pad with a stamping tool (or acrylic stamping blocks).

Dry the stamped images with a craft heat gun.

Step 11

Cut all the stamped flowers and leaves with their matching die set, or you can fussy cut them using micro-tip scissors.

Step 12

Stamp the sentiment on a white card stock using the VersaFine Clair Warm Breeze ink pad with a stamping block.

Dry the stamped sentiment word with a craft heat gun and then fussy cut it with a micro-tip scissors.

Step 13

Trim the background panel into 4 inch x 5 ¼ inch using a paper trimmer.

Add the background panel to an A2 card base with the On Point Glue.

Step 14

Cut a piece of white paper (copy paper works great) with the Delicate Doily die to create your own doily paper mat.

Add the doily paper to the card with the On Point Glue.

Step 15

Add the flowers and leaves to the card with On Point Glue.

Then, add some of a thin foam to the sentiment with On Point Glue and add it to the card with the same glue.

Step 16

Add more shimmer to the card by spraying and splatting some of the Sheer Shimmer Spark Spray.

The ink-smooshing, embossing, ink-swiping, and ink-splattering techniques give an amazing texture look to the background of this card.

And those layers of doily, flowers, leaves, and sentiment add more dimension to this mixed media card.

I hope you will give this tutorial a try and play around with different colors to see the surprise you will get for your cards. Thanks so much for stopping by our blog today.

Make a Cheery Birthday Card Using Fireworks! Shimmery Sprays

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-step7

By Neva Cole –

In today’s card making tutorial, I will show you how to use your Fireworks! Shimmery Spray inks in different ways rather than just spraying them!  All of the blooming sunflowers during my travels were the inspiration for this late summer birthday card.  It is very cool that sunflower heads follow the sun throughout the day, and they are always bright and cheery!

Skill:  Intermediate

Time:  1.5 hours

Directions:

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-Step1

Step 1

Stamp sunflower image in Delicata Golden Glitz and heat emboss with Iridescent Embossing Powder.  The Delicata Golden Glitz is one of the brightest gold inks, and works best for a sunflower.  Die cut with an electronic die cut machine, or fussy cut with scissors.

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-Step2
Step 2

Use a brush tip Fantastix to color in the center of the sunflower with Delicata Black Shimmer.

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-Step3

Step 3

Shake the Fireworks! spray until all of the shimmer is mixed in.  When the spray sits for awhile, the shimmer settles to the bottom and can be seen as a thin layer through the bottle.  Remove the spray lid and tap a bit of Fireworks! on your work mat from the end of the plastic tube.  Use a fine tip paint brush to paint the sunflowers a beautiful iridescent Dandelion Yellow.  Yellow ink is one of the more difficult inks to use, and this method solves that dilemma!

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-Step4

Step 4

Stamp the leaf image in Brilliance Pearlescent Ivy and heat emboss with Iridescent Embossing Powder.  Using embossing powder helps maintain the original ink color of the image while painting over with Fireworks! spray.  It also allows you to color inside the lines much more easily! Use a fine point paint brush to add Fireworks! in Bamboo Leaves.  Die cut or fussy cut the leaves.

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-Step5

Step 5

To get a finer sprinkling of more carefully located drops of Fireworks!, use the same paint brush and gently tap over the card stock to create a fine splatter pattern.  When using the spray nozzle, the color is denser on the cardstock.  Finish the edges by inking with an ink blusher and Brilliance Pearlescent Ivy.

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-Step6

Step 6

Edge the base card with an ink blusher and Delicata Golden Glitz.  Using inks throughout the card allows for perfect coordination.

2021-Aug-Neva-Fireworks!-Bday-card-step7

Step 7

Position the leaves and sunflowers on the card front to determine the location for the sentiment.  Stamp the sentiment in Brilliance Pearlescent Ivy and heat emboss with Iridescent embossing powder.  Adhere the layers of the card together.  The card front and leaves are adhered with Tear-It! Tape, and the sunflowers are adhered with thin dimensional foam adhesive.

Stamp Calla Lily image in StazOn Bordeaux.  Stamp Calla Lily Leaves image in StazOn Forest Green.  Set aside while working on the rest of the card.  The ink will take time to dry, otherwise it will smear or come off on your fingers.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step2
Step 2

Trim a sheet of Strathmore Bristol Vellum Finish 100 lb paper to 7″ x 15″.  My pad comes in 14″ x 17″ so it will make two cards of this style from one sheet.  Score at 5″ from each end and accordion fold sheet using bone folder to crease folds.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step3

Step 3

Place folded cardstock into Largest die from the Teardrop Lattice Gateway die by Heartfelt Creations.  Run through die cut machine.  Remove curved corners once they are cut, to allow all layers to cut through.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step13

Step 13

Apply Tear It tape to the back of prepared panels from Steps 9, 10, and 11.  (Notice that I decided to change color used for the sentiments  for step 12 and simply used the opposite side of the die cut.)

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step14

Step 14

Use and ink dauber to color the leaves and Calla Lily images with StazOn ink in Caribbean Green and Bordeaux.  Set aside for the ink to dry, I let mine dry over-night to keep from staining my fingers in the next step and smudging the ink.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step15

Step 15

Die cut the Calla Lily and leaves.  Prep space to create flowers.  Heat glue, glue gun, die cuts and Heartfelt Creations Pastel Pollen Stamens.  (Note I colored the back of the die cuts as well, but turns out it is not necessary because the back of the images do not show on the finished card.)

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step16

Step 16

Holding the Cally Lily die cut with a pair of tweezers and heat the back of foam paper until it just begins to curl.  The foam paper will curve towards the heat.  While the foam paper is still warm gently add a small dab of hot glue at the very base of the Cally Lily.  Place stamen and pinch closed, hold for a moment until hot glue cools and flower will hold it’s shape.  Repeat with remaining five flowers.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step17

Step 17

Heat the back of the leaf image until it curls.  While it is still warm pinch into shape until the foam paper has cooled and it will hold its shape.

Step 18

Using small dots of On Point glue adhere the Lattice Swirl Gateway die cut from Steps 4 and 5 to the front panel of the card.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step19

Step 19

Apply Scalloped panel to middle of section of the tri-fold card.

Step 20

Use hot glue to adhere foam flowers to the front of the card as shown above.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step21

Step 21

Continue to adhere flowers and leaves to the card front as shown.  Adhere the sentiment over the trimmed wires from the stamens.

2021-April-MothersDay-Card-step22

Step 22

Adhere die cuts from Step 11 to the back panel of the card.  Adhere flower and leaf and the sentiment panel in place as shown.
